This is Smitty. Smitty is a good dog. Smitty is on the right side of his fence.

This is Sidney. Sidney is a good dog too, but Sidney is on the wrong side of her fence. Sidney and Smitty should be on the same side of the fence.

Years ago, when I'd been regularly walking my dogs past this fence and on into the woods and orchards beyond, a new dog came to live in that house named Sidney. When Sidney was a youngun she could hop right over this fence, and she did. I would have to get the attention of her owner, who would then have to drive around the block and get her. Her owner, Bob, would not believe me when I told him she had hopped the fence. He insisted she had dug under the fence. No matter, I had seen her do it, and I knew. I stopped going into the orchards by that route for many years so as to avoid the situation.

A few weeks ago I started going that way again after, oh, eight or so years of going the long way around. I didn't see Sidney, but this new dog Smitty showed up at the fence by himself for a few days. He didn't even try to hop the fence, opting to try to chew his way through it instead, so I happily started going that way again.

Today while I had my back turned to the fence taking a photo of a boulder for #bouldersunday, I heard the fence rustling and thought Smitty was just shaking it again, but when I turned around, there was Sidney at my side.

That old broad can still jump a fence. Bob insisted she went under when he drove around to get her today.

Maybe I'll try to do a cartwheel today to see if I can still do that. I used to be pretty good at those.

You just be that irresistible to dogs. They know a dog lover when they see one :)

I'm pretty sure it's my dog that is irresistible to Sidney, but I am a dog lover for sure. And a cat lover. And chicken lover. I've also had my share of reptiles and rodents. and would love to have me a goat or two. Thanks for stopping in!

@owasco the next time you walk by the fence film Sidney jumping it. Then Bob will eat his words. lol

I'm worried about Sidney, now that she remembers she can hop that fence. I wasn't giving her a good reason to do so all those years. She was limping after, I hope she didn't hurt herself.

@owasco I was not thinking of that, I hope she did not harm herself either.

Those herding breeds are such good jumpers! It's pretty funny that she went right back to jumping the fence so many years later, just because you walked by. If the old dog can still do her old trick, I'm sure you can still do cartwheels! I'm not going to try it myself...

Yeah I'm not going to try it. I value my wrists too much. But I would love to feel that whirling control one more time!
So Sidney is a herding breed? I KNOW she just hopped right over this time too, she has always been far too large to go under a good and solid chain link fence with stakes holding it in place. And it was just a quick rattle of the fence I heard. Amazing!

She looks like an Australian Shepherd to me. Very hoppy. She's sure pretty though! I hear you on the wrist thing. These days I need all my structural integrity to get through the day. None to spare for frolicking!

Hahahaha - that was fun! Silly Bob - at least you know better...
Cheers! :)

thank you! And for reading to the end! That's always a thrill!

Hehehee, I always feel that way too when someone shows 'evidence' of actually having read what I wrote.. :P

Her owner would not believe she had hopped the fence. "No matter, I had seen her do it, and I knew." Eight+ years later, that dog can STILL hop the fence? And Bob still doesn't believe he didn't dig her way under, despite no dirt mounds.... no wonder you took the long way around. That Bob. :)
Sidney looks like a blue heeler (or mix) - that could explain her longevity and agility! Gotta love her!!!

P.S. I was unable to do cartwheels even in my prime, but if you can, more power to you!!!
