Damian Lillard wore a black T-shirt with "Stop Asian Hate" printed on the front while sitting out the Portland Trail Blazers' 112–105 win Friday night at the Orlando Magic as a response to the rise in hate crimes against Asian Americans across the United States.
The Blazers' Instagram account posted a photo of Lillard posing with Jonathan Yim, Blazers video coordinator/player development coach.
Yim posted the same photo on his Twitter page with the line: "Leader on and off the court."
During the Blazers' home game on March 19 against Dallas, Yim appeared on the halftime show on NBC Sports Northwest to talk about the rise in hate crimes against the Asian American and Pacific Islander community.
"I'd be remiss if I did not use this opportunity to address the rise of hate crimes against Asian Americans, especially those against the elderly and women," said during the broadcast. "This year has made me realize how important it is to use my voice to raise awareness and to fight against hate and injustice against all races, including the Asian American, Pacific Islander community. Each of us has to do our part to create a community that celebrates diversity, equality and inclusion. And when we do that, we are stronger together. Thank you."
