WHAT IS APP?

App means "application." An application is a software program that's designed to perform a specific function directly for the user or, in some cases, for another application program. It is a computer software, or a program, most commonly a small, specific one used for mobile devices. The term app originally referred to any mobile or desktop application, but as more app stores have emerged to sell mobile apps to smartphone and tablet users, the term has evolved to refer to small programs that can be downloaded and installed all at once.
There are thousands of apps designed to run on today's smartphones and tablets. Some apps can be downloaded for free, while others must be purchased from an app store.

Apps were most commonly used to take pictures, send or receive text messages, access the Internet or play games. Apps are easy and inexpensive to purchase and can be installed and removed from a device almost instantly without affecting the device's systems or other apps.
With the emergence of dapps, there’s been some confusion as to what the difference is between apps and dapps. First off, an app is short for application, the word app really became common once the iPhone appeared in 2007 and apps starting coming out. Apps were the new trendy thing, a new app was coming out every week that would make people’s lives easier in one way or another.

WHAT IS DAPP?

Decentralized Applications – dApps are applications that run on a P2P network of computers rather than a single computer. BitTorrent, Popcorn Time, BitMessage, Tor, are all traditional dApps that run on a P2P network, but not on a Blockchain (which is a specific kind of P2P network). DApps are built on blockchain technology and are decentralized with no central server or endpoint. This gives them several advantages over regular apps, offering more security, transparency, easier payment systems, and better data storage. Dapps is something new that really just started with the release of Ethereum. Dapp is typically an app that runs on a blockchain such as Ethereum or NEO. These dapps can be smart contracts, or software that is executing massive computations that is shared across hundreds or thousands of computers also known as nodes. As smart contracts become more complex, we need a way where apps and dapps can automatically sync with each other as data changes. Since dapps and smart contracts are such new innovative technologies, simplifying the process to connect apps and dapps is essential.

In this video you can see that founder of Dapp.com, Mr. Kyle Lu was standing in front of a LEGO shop. He began to explain the difference between a dapp and an ordinary app all with the help of simple LEGO bricks and pieces.
He further explained the difference between the two in terms of the back-end interface. With the help of the blocks, he explained how a dapp is run by a mechanism which is open source whereas the ordinary app runs on a back end interface which is hidden.
