What does it really mean to be different?

I think everybody at some point in time has heard the phrase, "dare to be different." Have you ever thought what being different actually looks like? Like really thought about it?

As a guy raised in a small farming town with very little variety in ethnically diverse people, I found this hard to understand. Is it me, or are there others out there with these same thoughts? I think most of us either attach being different with clothes or attitude and the activities/hobbies we have that set us apart from others around us.

In a world with access to almost anything we can imagine, what I thought used to set me apart is really just a norm in certain places. This has left me feeling average or sub-par in just about everything I do. Knowing that there is somebody that is better than me or "more unique" leaves me feeling a little unsettled.

I've never been one to compare myself to others or discourage myself due to comparison alone. With every Youtube video I've watched and social media post I've been a part of, it's left me feeling average. Almost as if I must do something new and extreme to set myself apart in my own mind. Is this a change in me, or something that is simply changing in me because of how my mind perceives the world now.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this.
