Andrew Eldritch, the one permanent and founding member of The Sisters of Mercy, keeps telling the world that the Sisters are not "goths", and yet, I don't think he can bemoan being classed as darkwave, especially given how Europeans use the term.
Here's an amusing quote:
David Bowie was telling me recently how great Damien Hirst is, and how Damien was very excited when told about the minotaur myth. I was shocked that Damien didn't already know it. Sorry David, but how can Hirst be such a great artist if he lacks a basic knowledge of history/myth/symbolism, if he lacks the vocabulary, the ability to insert visual shorthand like a hypertext link? And how much less rich an experience is it for the viewer who lacks the ability to recognise and follow such links?
I don't think much of Damien Hirst.
Oh, and Andrew Eldritch read Modern Languages at Oxford - but didn't graduate.
A shame that the Sisters of Mercy appear to be jammed inside some contractual limbo, hence haven't released anything new since 1993. So, enjoy their back catalogue.
This track, Afterhours, was originally released as a B-side of the 12" single EP Body and Soul.
Although not a classic dancefloor hit, given the right mental state, it appears to go on for ever...

I saw the Sisters live in Munich at the beginning of the 80s. At that time they were still very unknown and had just released the first Maxi Singles. I stood with my buddy at the bar drinking wine and we had fun with some English people who were also drinking. Later we noticed that exactly these were on stage.

If I recall, early singles like Body Electric and Alice were instant hits - at least within the dark nightclubs ;-)
By accident, saw them in Amsterdam, as was on holiday there. There would always be one surprise cover song, Jolene seemed to be a bizarre favourite - yes, the Dolly Parton song!
