Dash community,

With great consideration, the DCG team has decided to discontinue support for the Copay wallet in order to focus maximum effort on on the DashPay wallet as well as enabling Evolution features for the existing Dash Wallet.

The original intent for the Dash Copay wallet was to become the first wallet with Evolution features. As we began working with the Copay code, we realized that it would not be able to support this goal and pivoted away from this approach. Nonetheless, we decided to push forward with releasing a beta version of Copay so Dash users could at least try out multisignature functionality.

We introduced the first Copay beta back in January. After some initial testing we determined we needed to do some additional work to improve the product. We released our second beta to testnet in late June, and enabled mainnet support in early August.

During this time, we observed limited interest in the Copay product. We collect minimal data on our mobile apps to protect the privacy of our users. However, based on the standard download and session data we do get from the app stores, not only were few users downloading the app (less than 200 for both iOS and Android), most users only had a handful of sessions (the median average sessions per day was 0.2). We also saw minimal chatter regarding Copay on our social media channels.

Dash Core Group is currently developing three other mobile wallets (the React Native DashPay wallet as well as the iOS and Android versions of Dash Wallet) in addition to the continued development of our core protocol, APIs, and libraries. At this time, given our desire to get Evolution out the door as effectively as possible, the team believes it is in the network’s best interest to prioritize the development of the DashPay wallet (aimed at acquiring new users) as well as the enablement of Evolution features for the substantial Dash Wallet user base over the continued development of Copay.

This decision was carefully considered by the team and is not related in any way to the recent security issue identified on the original Bitcoin Copay wallet. That issue did not impact the DashCopay wallet code.

That said, we welcome any interested development teams from the Dash community to contribute to Copay. The repository is open-source and available on Github here.

Thank you to all the testers who participated in the beta and provided feedback, and to the broader community for your continued support as we work our way towards Evolution.
