Good Valentine's Day! Today we celebrate the day of love, but do you know who was the patron saint of lovers? What is the origin of this holiday? You will already be asked, but only a few know the answer.
Ready to know who was the saint for whom today we celebrate the day of lovers?
The origins
Last year we told you about the different ways of celebrating Valentine's Day in the world. Today, instead, we will tell you where this tradition comes from.
Valentine's Day was a Roman priest who lived in the 3rd century AD, when Emperor Claudius II ruled. In this convulsive century, the emperor forbade marriage to young people who would have made more in the army than in marriage. But Valentine did not obey this prohibition, organizing weddings in secret. In the end he was discovered, punished and martyred on 14 February... the day of lovers!
But the letters dedicated to lovers, where do they come from? Legend has it that when he was captured, Valentino fell in love with the daughter of the man who had imprisoned him and wrote to her a wonderful letter of love, signed "From your Valentine".
Hence the origin of writing letters and love postcards to the partner. Gifts will be added over time. And in the last century, this day turned into a commercial event, setting aside its origins and its importance, that of a priest who was executed for not having executed the orders of Emperor Claudius II, celebrating marriages among the young lovers.
The day of the lovers began to celebrate when Pope Gelasio I made official this date in memory of the martyred saint, reconfirming his belief. In spite of this, in 1969, this festivity was eliminated by Christianity on the pretext that we did not know what was true or false in the history of the saint.
Currently this date is used to give gifts to your loved one and so we invite you to discover the trip you could give your partner, your best friend, or some very dear relatives....
Because this year, we would like you to celebrate Valentine's Day in every form of love that exists!
Its celebration in the world
As everyone knows, Paris is the city of Love par excellence, but there are other places and countries rich in romance. Here are some of the customs in the world that have attracted the attention of our team!
In Great Britain, for example, before dawn, women look out onto the window to fix the first man to pass by, as it is assumed that the man they see will be the one with whom they will marry in that same year. In Japan they do not exchange gifts like we do in Europe, nor do they make romantic dinners, there the main protagonist in all shops is chocolate, so much so that it is estimated that half of the chocolate sold all year round belongs to that day.
In South Korea, it is the women who command and give gifts to men.... not without having anything in return: the man must give her the same gift that she did. A guaranteed success!
In Turkey, they use social networks to exchange love. An example is a few well-known restaurants that invite customers to leave a love message on their Facebook profile.
On the other side of the Atlantic, in Mexico, Ecuador and Costa Rica, Valentine's Day is known as the Day of Love and Friendship. Tradition says that one must express one's feelings to every person for whom one feels affection, be it simply friendship, family or, evidently, for whom one feels love.
In Canada, chocolate is the real protagonist of this day. In schools, children bring gifts to their friends, and adults stop to spend a good moment together.
Without a doubt, Valentine's Day is a celebration to celebrate all over the world and with the people who love it most, makes you find happiness again and makes this day a special moment!
