365 Days - Day 6 - A visit to Burgers Zoo and it's newly opened Mangrove

in days365 •  7 years ago  (edited)

Today I went to Burgers Zoo in Arnhem with my family. It was nice weather outside, we had 2 free admission tickets so we packed and went. (Children from 0 - 3 are free)

Burgers Zoo is not a big Zoo, but the habitats that they've built are really really nice and well built.

We started at The Jungle. This is what they're calling a EcoDisplay. They've built an indoor Tropical Rainforest with the warm humidity, dense vegetation and the animals that are walking around are doing so freely. You can find all kinds of birds, reptiles and more if you are looking well enough. And they also have a fun waterfall that you walk past.

After The Jungle we went to The Desert.

When you walk from The Jungle to The Desert you first have to walk through a fairly long cave.
They've even created a Stalacmite cave display.

It's dark here. Aaaaaah!

After you've crossed the cave you enter The Desert. You immediately notice that the climate is much nicer here.
You can find all kinds of animals here like a bighorn sheep, reptiles, snakes etc.

They even have a Tyrannosaurus Rex fossile.

We continued our journey to The Ocean. All the aquariums are always a real joy for my sons.
And the aquariums that they have are really beautiful. They have the largest living coral reef in a aquarium outside Australia.

This is the big Shark aquarium with all kinds of sharks.

And they have a Aquarium-Tunnel where the fish and Stingrays swim over you.

And of course my son was on a mandatory mission of Finding Nemo.

We've also visited The Mangrove. This EcoDisplay has been opened just 2 days ago. This really was the surprise of the day.
The display has been based on the Mangrove Forest in Belize - Brasil. The climate is pretty warm. In the center of the Mangrove you can find a few Manatees and there are all kinds of butterflies flying around. And there were A LOT of butterflies.

This one even decided to land of my shoulder.
