Dboontje Photocontest Contest "In search of the perfect photo"

How it all started

Ever since I started taking photo's I am attempting to get the perfect shot without any editing. No apps or programs for me, just plain shots. For many years now my buddy @guchtere tried to change my mind in all this. If I came home from a perfect holiday or any other random photoshoot, he was the one complaining that my photos were less than expected. Not that my photo's suck, because he would never say that, but they contain a lot more information then what the photo shows at that very moment.

As a PE teacher, I can say - with a little shame - that I'm a bit lazy. Why bother spending more time editing a photo then taking one? Why making the photo more ‘perfect’ then the scenery itself actually was? This was exactly how I thought about it, at least till a couple a weeks ago.
It was untill I came home from my Canada trip and I showed a few of my photo's to family and friends. I also told them that it was impossible to show them what we actually saw in real-life, because a digital sensor can't capture the same amount of detail the human eye can see. It made me realize that I could tell or show them what I wanted, but nobody would have any idea how beautiful it really was.

In order to convince me and show what is possible @guchtere asked for a few of my photos of my Canada trip. He copied and changed the pictures in a way he thought it made them look better. Nothing big but as subtle as possible. With that I mean that he didn't delete any parts or added any extras in the photo. He only adjusted the colour and added a little more contrast. He showed it to me: "Is this what it looked like?"
Darn.. This was exactly what it looked like and this was the moment that I started looking for an editing program. I'm not entirely convinced yet and I still hope to shoot photo's I can put on the wall without editing anything. However, I realized that it can make a difference. And that is why I want to start a photocontest on editing. Rules will follow...
