"Dear Dawne - Images: Sourcing Properly & Beware Of Copyright Concerns"
Season 1 - Episode 14
We Have An Experienced "Steemit Personal Mentor" To Help You Directly!
Just a reminder... @goldendawne is now a @curie curator too!
Title: Images: Sourcing Properly & Beware Of Copyright Concerns
Where do you get your images for when making a post on steemit? Are they yours? If not, do you know how to properly source them to avoid copyright issues?
Your Own Images
Make sure to state where the image was taken, the date it was taken and if you have another blog, social media page or website and these pictures are posted on those other sites, always state this fact somewhere in your post on steemit. You can do it below the image or at the bottom of your post. Some people even go as far as putting their steemit username on the image in a non-conspicuous location (ie. the bottom corner of the image)
Using Other's Images
In this post by @mindover is where you can find images that are approved to use on steemit.
This post is a great place to find images to use. I personally use Pixabay and Pexels the most. I have used Google Images also; but if you do this, you have to make sure to use the images labeled as free to use.
To do this on Google images, you go to Google and search. Once you have the images on your screen, you want to click on “Advance Settings” and scroll down to “Usage Rights”; from there you only want to use and see the ones that are listed as “Free to use, share and modify”.
When using images from Pexels, Pixabay or any other image websites listed in the above post, all rights are free for use but you still need to source the image on your post.
Sourcing Images In Your Post
Somewhere in your post you need to give the “url” directly to the image; not just a vague link to the general website. Be specific with the url.
If you have an image on your post that is NOT your own, do not use the tag “photography” as steemcleaners is cracking down on the misuse of this tag.
If you have someone else make you a banner or signature banner, make sure to acknowledge their efforts with their name (ie. Badge made by Username). This will help get them recognized by other steemians as well as give them credit where credit it due.
Come back next week, when I discuss plagiarism, but until then, check out these steemit FAQs.
For a more detailed explanation about plagairism on steemit see this in the FAQs section.

Payable Pennies (Available to EVERYONE for TODAY ONLY)
*Anyone can play. Anyone can join in!
First, a Payable Penny is something that I am using to educate people about how the votes get paid. Its a $0.03 upvote on their entry in the game/contest and it guarantees them something for making an effort (because $0.019 or lower and there is no payment). It is a fun way to educate you and help you to learn/engage at the same time.
How To Get Your Payable Pennies TODAY ONLY On This Post
#1 Leave a comment to Dawne on this post. It must be a question directed at her asking for her help, or it must be a relevant observation to her topic of the day.
#2 If you leave a comment and Dawne responds, you can earn "bonus" Payable Pennies for a relevant additional comment to her. Note: that is (2) $0.03 Payable Pennies just by engaging Dawne and following up respectfully with her replies!
#3 Resteem this post and tell me about it in the comment section and I will give you more Payable Pennies for that! You must leave a comment to me (@davemccoy) so that @goldendawne only focuses on her discussions.
Got it? You can earn up to (3) sets of $0.03 in Payable Pennies today just by engaging in thoughtful and engaging dialogue!
When: Today!!!
We are proud to present the news that #newbieresteemday and @goldendawne have teamed up in a partnership called "Dear Dawne". @goldendawne is an accomplished member of our community and she wants to help both the members of the Newbie Resteen Initiative and alse the "newbies" we serve.
Dawne will be regularly participating with us in a program called "Dear Dawne" where she will take comments, look directly at your posts and give you one on one suggestions, (and she will even go through your blog... How's that for being awesome!). Basically she wants to be your mentor and help you with ideas, formatting, access to resources, and even applying for various grants and delegations. Plus you can get "discovered" by a valued and connected member than can help you rise through the ranks!
Quick Facts About Dawne
In just the last two months, Dawne has:
- Become the writer & staff member for @qurator (which if you dont know about it, you should)
- Been delegated 10k SP from a whale- she is a Stewards of Gondor recipient
- Holds weekly, sometimes daily, contests to share the delegation she was awarded and given
- She is a mentor in certain Discord groups and helps incoming new members with formatting, posts and how to succeed
- Dawne was approved this past week and is now a @curie curator too!
In the mentor program she is involved in... she says "the best reward is knowing and watching the people you partnered up with have their own steemit page and posts blossom and grow".
She is the real deal.
To read more about Dawne check out her past post: Personal Mentoring Statement For Homesteadersonline Community or just go to her steemit page @goldendawne an see the quality of her work and the connections she has.
How It Will Work
"Dear Dawne" will be available to help you individually today. She will answer questions, she will offer advice, she will even direct you to the right place if you don't know how to find something on Steemit. This is your chance to connect with a "60" Reputation Steemian on an individual and personal basis.
She is available to give you guidance and help in just a few hours. You just ask your questions to her in the comment section. Its that simple. She will read the comment section and reply individually with you and decide how best to help you from there.
I want to thank @yabapmatt for noticing this post and supporting our community in general. He is also a witness and has been paying a lot of attention to many newbies and minnows. It is encouraging to see some of the established witnesses paying attention to our community, so thank you Matt!

Proper image sourcing is so important for new people to learn here. I learned all about it when trying to join qurator :) I wrote a post about it a while back, and I've noticed that @dynamicgreentk has been suggesting it every time someone doesn't use proper image sourcing in their posts.
We are so fortunate to have @goldendawne as a helpful source for all of us at newbieresteemday too!

This is a comment I made to another post which was about proposed changes to the reward systems on the payout of rewards. @eanwarped has confirmed to me that my thoughts are correct. I repost the same comment here as there s a promise of newbie nickles, (which I have received some in the past).
I would like to point out one thing, that I think many are going to miss about this, I will use my own self as an example. While the threshold is as 0.02 SBD, this does not mean if your account has a vote and it displays as 0.02 you still will get no rewards, I have had votes at 0.04 and gained no reward, this was due to the price of SBD at the time, If steem is priced at SBD is at 2 Dollar per SBD and you vote with 100% of your vote power when you have 50 SP you will get a reward showing of 0.01 this is a value amount in FIAT US Dollar Not a value in SBD, to reach the SBD threshold level you would need four of those votes and the displayed amount woud need to be ).04 before you recieved a payment, This is my undertanding.
I think this is something we should all become aware of with the rise and fall of the value of Steemit currencies.

Hey @jan23com... I am all on this topic right now... In fact I am giving about Payable Pennies to bring awareness to the issue and to promote "community minded" witnesses such as @steemcommunity and @danielsaori. Here's some payable pennies (or at least I think they pay off at $0.03 upvote ;)

It is true with the fluctuation of sbd that what you think your rewards should be,may very well not be when it comes to the seven day payout time frame.
The topic has been discussed quite a bit on the platform but many people don't understand all the aspects of cryptocurrency let alone how the curator and author rewards are actually paid out.

I was more leaning toward the discussion about the minimum threshold for a payout being 0.02 SBD, a value displayed of 0.02 USD is not the same as a value of 0.02 SBD, If a post does not have a 0.02 SBD value there is no reward.
The confusion on the site over so many things is a big deterrent.

Dear Dawne @goldendawne Thank you so much for the info. My question is:
Let's say I use a photo from wikipedia. They show you how to use it on the web, they give you "attribution link". However, this link is not the link to the file itself. You wrote - "Somewhere in your post you need to give the “url” directly to the image; not just a vague link to the general website. Be specific with the url."
So, am I posting the file URL or attribution URl, or maybe both? Not that I use a lot of the wiki pictures :).
Also, on Pixels, if the picture is free to use, what am I suppose to write in my blog? Thank you in advance!

Let's see... I have seen many people post a url link to source their image to Pinterest- well Pinterest is not where the image originated from. Pinterest is a board and the person who shared the image actually has it posted on their own personal blog or website - so that personal blog or website would be the URL needed to properly source the image.
I think that is what you are referring to. Chances are images on wikipedia (not to be confused with common wikimedia) is posted elsewhere on the internet and needs to be credited, not wikipedia

OHH Ok I got it. So for wikipedia we use "atribution" link, to credit the author, it makes perfect sense. Thank you for the clarification, you are the best, very fast response!

Thank you for this @goldendawne! This is a topic that newbies may need to familiarize themselves with as failure to cite sources may be mistaken as plagiarism even if it's not. I have discussed unintentional plagiarism a few weeks back because I see a lot of newbies who don't provide citations or references.
https://steemit.com/newbieresteemday/@wanderlass/plagiarism-by-newbies-the-importance-of-citing-sources-and-honesty
As for the image sourcing, it was pointed out to me by rubencress that it's important to also cite the image owner aside from the source link. I have started including the license as well aside from the image owner (not a legal requirement for CC0 images but best to be clear). Eg. of how I do it now:

EXCELLENT example @wanderlass!
Steemit (steemcleaners) has been watching and cracking down on the people who post an image, it may be cited and sourced properly, but they tag the post with photography... BUT YOU CANNOT claim a tag of photography if the image is not yours or original.

Oh I didn't know people even use free images for photography tags. Yes that is something they should be aware not to do. Hopefully they learn about it and not wait for a flag from steemcleaners. Thanks @goldendawne!

Dear Dawne (@goldendawne),
I seem to be struggling to earn any curation rewards, posts where I thought I might I seem to get nothing, yet occasionally I'll get something bob up from a post I don't even remember upvoting. Do you have any advice to offer a rookie as to how to increase my chances of earning curation rewards?
Thanks,
Sparkesy

The best ways to get more traffic to your own posts, more UPvotes and comments from other is to post-promote in Discord groups:
Just look for them in the search bar above and you'll find a connection to their groups on DIscord.
And check out this post listing 50 best Discord groups for more to choose from
Next, comment on others' posts as much as you can. I can confirm this from personal experiences- if you comment on someone's post and give a well-thought out comment, there is a 75-90% chance they will come to your page to see who you are, what you post about and may leave a comment (with an upvote) if you have good content.

Thanks Dawne,
I've been trying to find some tine to better understand Discord and what it has to offer. There are certainly some useful tips there. I've been consciously trying to increase my presence by engaging where possible (or at least where I think I can offer some value).
One of my challenges is that the majority of my content so far is fairly niche in that it relates to a small Fantasy Sports League that is being run here on Steemit, so people that "discover" my work may not be inclined to show it much love. At least until I find the time to broaden my body of work.
Do you have any tips for securing curation rewards from upvoting others?

Yes when you have such a specific niche you write about, it can be difficult to find others who share your interests.
Maybe take one of your tags (ie. sports, fantasysports, etc) and search it in the search bar. Maybe you can connect with others.
Once you find another member who shares the same posts, topics and tags as you... look at who UPvoted and commented on their posts. Go to those people's pages and start looking at their posts. Comment there and make sure to mention your common interests, etc- this can help you get a following unique to your interests.

Ohh wow! This is cool! I didn't know that we still need to put some citation even if the photo is from you. If the photo is mine, I used to just leave it there without saying anything. I though that is already automatically considered as your own. Now i know. :)
"Hi Dawne, I just want to ask since I don't really know how it works, what can we do to have our posts curated? What are the requirements?"
Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

You don't necessarily HAVE to put citation for your own images, but to show professional it doesn't hurt. When large curation groups look through posts to curate, image ownership is a BIG search. So it's always good to just let everyone know.. these are mine.
In regards to getting large curation votes and being found, every curation has different requirements and guidelines. Sometimes they have their criteria listed, most usually not.
So they best advice I have first-
check out this post from last week I did with @davemccoy. I offer up some ideas and tips.
Also, make your post look at perfect as you can. Check and double check the spelling, syntax and formatting. As simple s it sound, if spelling is off, formatting looks cluttered and amateurish; curators may skip over your post for another member's post who has a cleaner and more unified post.
