The death is present everywhere, it idealizes, it takes off, it is feared and at last stance we don't even want to think about it but the truth is that this same fear make us want to learn more and more abouth death despite it would be tiny things as we are goin to see on this list without discussing philosophical topics or the why of existence. Unless we work as embalmers or forensic we would barely know what happens with our body when it passes away, I bet no one thinks about that, but knowing the proccess in detail has an undoubtable scientific and maybe morbid interest.
Here we would find myths and lies that had go along with death like decapitations and suicides and in other side some curiosities from the procces of itself.
1. Selfdestruction
Source
After dying there are some changes that may happen to the body, some of them could be:
- The color of the skin change
- The blood becomes gooier
- The body remains rigid temporarily
- The overall descomposition of our body
There are several factors that affects in the descomposition, including the external ones but there is one really curious and it is the fact that the digestive enzimes that once digested the food will begin to attack our organism, this procces is called Autolisis or Autodigestion, the Autolisis is the destruction of a cell through it's own enzymes, basicly an autodestruction.
2. Postmorten arousings
This event is given in specific causes and it results in an erection on the corpse, known as Priapism. This phenomenon is not exclusive in men, now that there are cases with women where the vaginal lips grows and blushes.
All this is caused due to cerebral damage or blood accumulation in the cases of hanging or if the corpse is upside down.
The Postmorten arousing is more common in deaths by hanging, despite it also happens in fast or violent deaths like a shot in the head or a quick effect poison
3. The senses
It is said that the last sense we lost after the death is the hearing, and the first is generally the vision, the fact that we lose first our vision is comprobated, but the hearing is just sustained by some theories.
Firs I must clarifiy that indeed, it sounds stupid to think about the order in which we lose our senses after dying now that despite these still work they can not transmit the stimulus to the brain, others say that the last sense we lost is feel.
The people that supports the hearing theory, they explain cases where patients who were resurected after they died, could say what they heared while they were "death"
4. Decapitation
This myth comes from a long time ago, when the guillotine was the favorite execution method, a method that causes death so quickly that the head remains conscious around 20 seconds, or at least that was believed, they thought the brain remains active but is false. This myth came across in 1793 with the decapitation of Charlotte Corday, executed in the guillotine for murdering a journalist, after the head fell in the basket, the executioner took it and slapped it, those who were present said that the woman's eyes looked at the executioner with disgust in his gaze. Those who would be decapitated was told to flicker once executed and it is said that they did during 20 seconds or more but despite these histories seem to prove it in the present it has been denied, the flickers and the babbling and the expresions were muscular spasms, the head, once separated from the body doesn't have any oxygen so it automatically goes into a state of coma.
5. The left handed curse
The theme was discussed in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1991 and they explain that the death probability of the left handed people was then 2% higher than the right handed people, the Civil American Registry supported this by giving facts like that the life hope is 9 year less than the average, 11 for the men and 5 for the women. An explanation for this (despite it's not completely confirmated) is that having to live in a world made for and by right handed people there exists some difficulties, therefore the risk of accidents increases.
6. The hair and the nails
Source
It is common to think that when we die the hair and the nails keeps growing, yes, this is pretty true, but the idea may seem like they keep growing for a long time but the first you must have in mind is that not all cells die at the same time, basically, when the heart stops beating, the oxygen supply to the brain is cut off. However, the point is that from there the glucose stops being generated, but in the body it is still disseminated in good quantities, and the nerve cells just die about ten minutes later.
For all these reasons, it is that the nails and hair grow even after death, but only for ten minutes, no more than that.
That was all, 6 curiosities of death you (maybe) didn't know, I put a lot of time into this so I hope you liked it, don't forget to comment and vote, a million thanks for reading <3
