Deer, sambar, or deer (English: deer) is a ruminant mammal (ruminant) animal belonging to the Cervidae family. One of the hallmark of deer is the antler (deer antler), and not the horn, which is the growth of bone that develops annually (usually in summer) especially on the stag (although there are some exceptions).

There are about 34 species of deer worldwide that are divided into two major groups: the old world deer groups belonging to the subfamilia of Muntiacinae and Cervinae; as well as the new world deer group, Hydropotinae and Odocoilinae.

The weight of the deer generally ranges from 30 to 250 kilograms (70 to 600 pounds), though North Pudu averages 10 kilograms (20 lb) and the average Moose is 431 kilograms (1,000 lb). They generally have a flexible, compact body and long, strong legs suitable for rough forest terrain. Deer is also an excellent jumper and swimmer. Deer ruminants, or chews, and has four stomach chambers. Deer teeth are adjusted by eating on vegetation, and like other ruminants, they lack the top of the incisors, instead of having a heavy pad on the front of their upper jaw. Some deer, such as on the island of Rum, do not consume meat when available. Chinese water deer, Tufted deer and deer have been enlarged over canines forming sharp fangs, while other species often lack the fangs at all. The deer cheek teeth have crescent mountains of enamel, allowing them to grind different vegetations.
