TYPES OF DIESEL ENGINE SMOKE AND SOLUTION

in deiselengines •  6 years ago  (edited)

There are three basic types of smoke, as identifiable by their colour.

  1. Black smoke is the most common smoke emitted from diesel engines. It indicates poor and incomplete combustion of the diesel fuel. There are many causes,

Incorrect timing
solution: Reset the Timing or Adjust the Timing

Reseting the Timing via TDC (Top Dead Center)
In a reciprocating engine, the dead centre is the position of a piston in which it is farthest from, or nearest to, the crankshaft. The former is known as top dead centre (TDC) while the latter is known as bottom dead centre (BDC).

Dirty or worn Injector Pump and Nozzles

Injectors sticking open too long!

Over-fueling
Solution: Take the Nozzles for Servicing and pressure Testing

Faulty turbocharger
-Not enough air to match the fuel
-Carbon clogged Turbo
-Broken Turbo Seal

Incorrect valve clearance

Incorrect air/fuel ratio>Low cylinder compression
Dirty Air Cleaner/Clogged Air Cleaner
Carbon up intake manifolds
Other engine tune factors
Excessive carbon build up in combustion and exhaust spaces
Cool operating temperatures

  1. Blue smoke is an indication of oil being burnt in the combustion chamber. The oil can enter into the combustion chamber for various reasons .

Bad valve guides or seals

Worn power part (cylinders, piston rings, bearings, ring grooves)

Seized Rings to Piston

Diesel and Engine Oil dilution
Bad Turbo Charger

  1. White smoke occurs in Diesel Engines when raw diesel comes through the exhaust completely intact and unburned. Some causes of this include

Faulty or damaged injector pump and Nozzles
Incorrect injection timing
could be a worn timing gear or damaged injector pump crankshaft keyway or key, and Low Injector Timing

Low cylinder compression (eg caused by leaking or broken valves, piston ring seizing, cylinder-ring and bearing wear, or cylinder glaze)

Water entering combustion spaces will also create white smoke
This can happen when water enters into the Diesel Tank
