I don't entirely disagree with the comments that have been made about how our obsession over the Johnny Depp vs Amber Heard trial has been disproportionate to several pressing issues that we have.
That said, I think that a lot of people are missing the importance of this case.
I've said for years that the worst thing that you can imagine being done to you is also the worst thing that you can be falsely accused of doing to someone else. I stand by that.
What Amber Heard accused Johnny Depp of doing to her was shocking and disgusting and something that any innocent person would want cleared from his record.
There is a deeper meaning to this.
Truth managed to prevail over narratives. It prevailed over narratives that Amber Heard herself, in no uncertain terms, believed would shield her from justice. For a long time, Amber Heard was right. She was winning for several years by operating in a world in which believing presumed victims was bolstered and the suggestion that we should presume innocence was conflated with not believing victims.
The reason why Amber Heard is, on net, losing $13 million is because she effectively exploited a cultural phenomenon for personal gain for several years and we finally got wise to it.
This is bigger than a lover's quarrel between a couple of privileged Hollywood douches. In this case, the court correctly managed to trounce a toxic cultural trend.
