Avoid depreciation
Depreciation can be defined as the decrease or reduction in value of something or somebody. For instance, a car that has been used for seven years would certainly not have the same value as the new one. In fact, a car is assessed to have a depreciation of 25% per annum in government establishment: thereby having zero value after 4 years.
In life, everything is expected to depreciate at some point in time, except the Christian life. The moment you become a Christian, God expects you to continue growing in His grace as you are abiding in His word. In actual fact, God frowns at depreciation.
Depreciation in the life of a Christian is synonymous to backsliding which is not usually sudden, but a gradual process. Backsliding may begin with a general feeling of spiritual indifference. Common indices of spiritual depreciation include skipping quiet time, poor prayer life, lateness to church, lack of passion or commitment to spiritual things etc.
It later degenerates to compromising the truth of God’s word that was once firmly upheld. Depreciation begins in the heart but often concealed in secure. It may remain hidden behind a façade of religiosity. You may still be regular and active in church services but your heart is filled with lust, jealousy, bitterness and worldliness. If you notice an apathy concerning spiritual matters, a decline in your devotion to God or a compromise of the truth; cry to God for help immediately.
Sincerely admit your backslidden condition before Him, repent of your spiritual lethargy and plead for forgiveness. After your genuine repentance, maintain a consistent daily devotional life. Read and meditate on His word and endeavor to apply it to your life situations and daily interaction with people.
Friend, spiritual depreciation ultimately leads to spiritual decay and rottenness! In other words, backsliding graduates from little compromise of the truth of presumptuous sin and consequently apostasy.
Daily self examination helps you to know your stand before God and to amend your ways if you are not getting it right. I pray that God empowers you with grace and upholds you from falling casualty to spiritual depreciation.
My God will increase you on every side. God bless you.
Thanks so much for going through this.
