How dare they supply what Americans are demanding!? Clearly they're at fault for having the audacity to give us what we want.
The history of prohibition is overwhelmingly a history of failure. It's good to keep in mind that old definition of insanity, doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.
The incentives always undermine effective enforcement. Take out one cartel, and you've just increased the market opportunities for another. Reduce the supply and you drive up the price, luring others into the market. Our years of effort in attacking Columbian farms did nothing to substantially decrease supply, had no effect on the demand side, and ended up funneling money to terrorists. Want to ensure corruption of law enforcemen? Go all in on prohibition.
Plus, the more we use drones and missile strikes, the more certain it is that we eventually hit a school, a hospital, a wedding. We will blithely kill innocents to prevent voluntary transactions between suppliers and consumers.
The U.S. has any number of stupid policies, but few have been as futile in achieving their intended goals at such a high price in human carnage as the war in drugs.
Spoiler alert: The drugs win - every time. And politicians who care about nothing but getting and keeping power will keep escalating the violence unceasingly without ever accomplishing anything that comes close to the price we pay.
