Specialists Discover New Species of Shrew in Philippines

in descover •  7 years ago

A global group of researcher from the United States and Germany has found another types of vixen living in a forested zone on Mt. Mantalingahan, a mountain on Palawan Island in the Philippines.

Named the Palawan greenery wench (Palawanosorex muscorum), the new species was first seen in 2007 by the late Danilo 'Danny' Balete, field study pioneer and research relate at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, IL.

The vixen has a thin, pointed nose and dim coat. Dissimilar to different vixens, its tail is shrouded in thick hide instead of obvious scales.

With wide forefeet and long paws, the Palawan greenery wench dives through humus looking for its most loved tidbit: night crawlers.

The analysts investigated these anatomical qualities to establish that the Palawan greenery wench was an unmistakable animal categories.

The Philippines is such a hotbed for mammalian biodiversity that finding the Palawan greenery wench didn't precisely stun us," said group pioneer Dr. Larry Heaney, Negaunee Curator of Mammals at the Larry Heaney, Negaunee Curator of Mammals at the Field Museum in Chicago.

From multiple points of view, discovering this species was precisely what we had anticipated."

It gives a few insights about how little vertebrates have developed and moved amongst Asia and Africa," included colleague Dr. Jacob Esselstyn, from the Museum of Natural Science at Louisiana State University.
