A year or so ago I was hired to design the rooftop for a new luxury building in the upper west side of manhattan. The client asked for a modern rooftop with a few open space gardens and seating areas. They wanted there to be an interior space with a bar and lounge area as well. The overall vibe for the space was to be modern but cozy.
I did various concept sketches early on to explore different potential uses of the space. It became clear after reviewing the different designs that there were a few main concepts. One was to maximize the southern facing sun. Another was to create a fire pit seating area, lounge chairs and a deck with tables. This would offer the residents of the building a variety of outdoor options when the weather is nice.
Here is an alternative design.
The interior space was designed to be within a pavilion style box that sits on the rooftop. The box is made out of mostly glass with metal and wood paneling. There are retractable glass doors so that the interior can become almost completely open in the summer time. Please feel free to comment on the designs!
