experience my life with my own design

in design •  last year

As with all my spaces, I started the project room because a location became available - and I felt this location called for a gallery-like environment. As an interior designer, I also thought it was interesting to have an 'exercise room' where I can experiment and invite others to express themselves. After all these years, I've been doing things for so many different people, and here I can do whatever I want -it's a playground.
Having everything in one area creates an ecosystem - this is a necessity for me because if I had to run from one place to another I would've never managed, but it also means my activities feed one another. It also aligns with the local approach I've had from the outset, although it's interesting that despite being local, I've managed to reach out to the world. Most of my furniture is made in Europe, and by local manufacturers.
Every piece is made to order because I don't want to have any stock. I think I've been a model because a lot of people are now working in this way.
I remember feeling very uncomfortable with the idea of showing my designs to potential manufacturers when I started out.
The idea that someone can say: No, we don't want your stuff.' Where do you go from there?
You lose confidence. I felt so much more comfortable doing things on my own terms, in my own way.
