3D design - Rachet's Omniwrench

in design •  8 years ago

In this tutorial I will show in easy to follow steps how to model Ratchet's Omniwrench using the free CAD software Onshape.

Import an Omniwrench image

  1. Search Google for a reference picture you like and import it into Onshape
  2. Use the import button (+ symbol) in the lower left corner.
  3. Open a Sketch (e.g. Front) add the picture and place it around the center point (we will use the mirror tool often)
  4.  Add the size you want your final print to be, in my case 6 cm is fine.
  5. Close this sketch and name it "Image" or something similar you like.

Sktech - Top part

  1. Start a new sketch (Front again) and use the line / circle tool to following the image outlines but only the half..
  2. Please note that we use two techniques later on. For Shape 1 we use Extrude and Shape 2 we use Revolve.
  3. Once one half is sketched, mirror the line and circles over using the middle line.

Extrude and Revolve

With the sketch being complete, go ahead and Extrude / Revolve the parts as described above. Please note that for the Extrude related part you need to select Symmetric since we revolve around the center line. The result should look like this.

Sketch - Pipe part

Use the Line tool and draw along the reference picture. Since we will use Revolve you just need to draw half of the shape.

After selecting the sketch and using the Revolve tool (Revolving Axis is the middle line) the model should look like this.

Sketch - Handle part

  1. Draw to Center point circles in the position as per the reference picture.
  2. Use the Line tools to form the handle shape.
  3. Make sure to use the Tangent constraint for the lines that touch the circle.

Great! At this point you are almost done. Just Extrude the handle sketch, apply some Fillet's and Chamfer's. If you are done your model should look similar to this.

The complete printable model is also available on Thingiverse for free download.
