How to Use Water to Cleanse and Detoxify the Body

There is much debate between the medical establishment and non-traditional healthcare providers on how water cleanses the human body. The medical establishment holds the view that the major function of water as related to purifying the body lies in it's use as the transport tool used by the kidneys, with a small amount of benefit to sweat glands. Non-traditional views put much more importance to the sweat glands despite the lack of scientific research supporting that view. In many cultures, steam baths are considered as important to good health as vitamins and minerals. The view of water cleansing the body through sweat is because it is believed that toxins leave the body along with the sweat.

There are two reasons to doubt this claim. The first reason is simply the physiology of toxin storage. The vast majority of toxins are stored in fat cells and are not floating freely in the blood. Even if all the toxins located in the blood were removed at one time, it would be a very small dent in the overall levels of toxins in the body.

The release of toxins from fat is so slow, that a person would have to be excessively sweating constantly for weeks and also not consume any more toxins during that time to eliminate a substantial portion of the total toxins in their body. While this type of sweating would reduce toxin levels in the body, it would also cause extreme problems with electrolyte balances of the body and result in more harm than good. The most prescribed methods of 'water cleansing' usually call for a day of fasting along with excessive sweating. This will briefly lower toxin levels in the blood, but those levels will quickly be replaced as toxins are released from fat storage.

The second reason to doubt the claim that excessive sweating can drastically reduce toxin levels in the body is from research done on the composition of sweat. While sweat does contain some salts like sodium and potassium, and under diabetic conditions can contain sugar, there is very little else that is found in the sweat of people undergoing water cleansing detoxification.

The major function of water as related to cleansing the body is its vital role in the kidneys. The kidneys are basically huge filtering devices that cleanse the blood of toxins and harmful materials. About 20% of all the blood in the human body passes through the kidneys every minute. So in five minutes, every drop of blood in your body has been filtered. The kidneys remove many different types of toxins and regulate the amounts of many beneficial materials. For instance, sodium is needed by the body, but excessive amounts can have harmful effects on the body. The kidneys make sure that the right amount of sodium is present in the blood.

The kidneys also remove the byproducts of normal bodily functions. For instance, urea is a byproduct of muscle use that is harmful if it builds up in the bloodstream. The kidneys remove this from blood to prevent damage to the body.

Once this material is removed from the bloodstream, the kidneys use water to carry the materials out of the body in urine. For this reason, proper hydration and water intake is necessary for the proper function of the kidney. When dehydrated, the kidneys are not able to remove toxic materials at the proper rate and damage to organs can result.
