Adventures in Directing

Hart Plaza, Downtown Detroit.

The September sun is strong on the backs of four characters gathered at The Gateway to Freedom. Me, in my bright orange 'Pine Knob' t-shirt and a massive casio backpack holding the bits and pieces of my video recording gear. Dusty, our afternoon director, is squinting into the sun and trying to figure the best angle for the shot... standing as close on edge to the Detroit River as we could manage in order to get the full monument in the frame.

Mark & Jim - the evangelical tour guides. Having been delayed in an effort to witness to two young men, (who, funnily enough had mistaken Mark for our own, home grown Kid Rock), joined us as the project was about to begin.

Jim has been ministering in the Metro-Detroit area for a long time, he has researched in depth the occult symbolism held within the 3 block radius we are about to walk and he is nervous because we are running on a very short clock.

September 23rd looms.

Its one of those dates people have been talking about, like the end of the Mayan Calendar, Y2K, Pi... But the 23rd is also slated as the next power-up for Switzerland based CERN's Large Hadron Collider and according to the presenter for this little film, this action will usher in what begins the End Times.

I have had the opportunity to speak at length with Jim on a few subjects for my podcast project. He seems very knowledgeable in his field, his easy slip into sermon is something I have learned to appreciate as part of his personality and I recognize the desire to witness in someone so involved with their faith. It's admirable, to a certain extent, but Jim also falls into a particular niche of evangelist that sees the devil in every detail. His hyperbolic paranoia has nearly stopped me in my tracks on this thing several times.

But I made up my mind to do this documentary and will continue to work on it to the best of my ability. If nothing else I can acknowledge the experience is worthy of the teachable moments held therein.

Meant to represent the Goddess Nuit and her rainbow bridge from life into the next here after but according to the presenter has a much more nefarious meaning and use which will charge particles into part of the formula for a real deal star-gate & wormhole.

I will be sure to link the video when it is complete. For now I am fighting with still images and about 20 minutes of audio that has to be made fluid, succinct and entertaining... so in the words of Maynard James Keenan:

And after calming me down with some orange slices and some fetal spooning, E.T. revealed to me his singular purpose.

In the end, no pun intended, I was able to complete this project and hopefully will be able to let it go from here. It's not been viewed as of yet, (I was up until 7am finishing the darn thing and fell asleep as YouTube finished its process.) but I think at least the part over which I had control came out well enough.

The science of it it interesting, the strategically placed esoteric symbolism from ancient times. The mix of mythology and modern world. Saturday may bring about some interested intangible effects but we will just have to wait and see.

Down the line I might be able to work on another project with this tour as the main topic... but again, only time will tell!
