Zudem gilt der Ro 80 als das bekannteste aller Autos mit Wankelmotor. Die Idee eines Verbrennungsmotors mit kreisenden Kolben verfolgte Felix Wankel ab den späten 1920er Jahren, die Entwicklung zur Serienreife dauerte mehr als 30 Jahre. Im März 1954 entwarf Wankel die Grundform des später nach ihm benannten Aggregats. Drei Jahre später lief dieser Motor erstmals aus eigener Kraft auf einem Prüfstand der NSU-Werke. Die Mannschaft der NSU-Entwicklungsabteilung vereinfachte das technisch komplizierte Gebilde mit zwei ineinander rotierenden Bauteilen. Auch dank dieses Motorkonzepts war der Ro 80 das wohl avantgardistischste Auto von NSU.

Von 1967 bis 1977 fuhren insgesamt 37.406 Ro 80 im Werk Neckarsulm vom Band. Das Auto ging als fortschrittlichstes, größtes und zugleich letzte Modell der Marke in die Geschichte ein. 1969 fusionierte das Unternehmen aus Betreiben der Volkswagen AG mit der Ingolstädter Auto Union GmbH NSU Auto Union AG. 1985 entstand aus dieser Vereinigung die heutige AUDI AG.
