At the beginning of December 2019, news of Coronavirus broke out from Wuhan, China.
Presently, just four months after the news officially broke, there have been over 1.2 million reported cases of this deadly disease, with over 66,000 reported dead already.
It is spreading very fast and the death toll is expected to rise in the coming weeks.
While the World Health Organization (WHO) initially said it was too early to declare the situation a global public health emergency, the outbreak was finally declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on 30 January 2020.
Fear of this virus has continued to rise despite all government efforts to stop the spread of this dreadful disease.
The United States seems to be at the top of the table having recorded over 300,000 cases of infected people, and close to 10,000 deaths presently.
Spain, Italy, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom also following closely.
That said, let’s look at the Coronavirus itself.
Coronaviruses are a group of viruses that cause several illnesses in the body of infected patients.
They are mostly found in various types of animals and they are also capable of leaping on humans.
Ahead of the latest outbreak, there had been two other records of Coronaviruses on humans that gave birth to SARS and MERS in 2002 and 2012 respectively.
This virus causes symptoms such as fever, sore throat, fatigue, and dry cough.
Health experts also claim that it may later metamorphose into more complicated issues that could lead to difficulties in breathing.
Its origin.
The new Coronavirus is believed to have broken out from a seafood market in Wuhan, a central Chinese city.
According to the city’s health commission, the infection blew up between December 12 and 29 from a number of the patients who worked at the market.
Experts are yet to realize the full scope of the danger it poses and how easily it can spread among people.
It is said that it is very infectious in its incubation period that can last for as much as 14 days.
What are the Government doing to stop the dreadful disease?
Many governments globally have closed their borders and also stopped traveling in and out of their country at present.
Also, there is a “stay at home” order imposed by various governments, especially those that have recorded innumerable cases of the coronavirus disease.
This they say will reduce its spread while they battle the lives of those already infected.
How to treat the Coronavirus.
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), there are no specific treatments for patients infected with the Coronavirus yet. In most cases, patients will recover on their own.
Adequate rest and medication to treat symptoms are the best options for patients.
People who are mildly sick are advised to drink plenty of fluids and rest but those who are worried over their conditions should call their country’s emergency line to report their case.
Preventive measures.
According to the general public health information to prevent the coronavirus disease everyone should:
Wash their hands regularly for 20 seconds, with soap and water or alcohol-based hand rub.
Cover their nose and mouth with a disposable tissue or flexed elbow when they cough or sneeze.
Avoid close contact (1 meter or 3 feet) with people who are sick.
And stay home and self-isolate from others in the household if they feel unwell.
One thing to avoid, however, is touching the eyes, nose, or mouth if hands are not clean.
