Fliegen und Fahren - Ein Experiment

Hallo Steemians,

nein, nicht schon wieder Island! DOCH! Heute soll es um das Fahren im schönen Island gehen. Auto, Straßen, Sprit und mehr.

Lasst uns mit dem Auto starten. In vielen Blogs, Vlogs und Co. wurde empfohlen besonders im Winter einen SUV mit Allradantrieb zu mieten. Die Witterungsverhältnisse in Island seien unberechenbar und gerade Schotterstraßen oder Anstiege wären oft mit kleineren Kompaktklasse
Fahrzeugen oftmal nur schwer zu passieren. STIMMT! Wir haben uns in unserem KIA Sportage super sicher gefühlt, konnten alle Straßen problemlos passieren und sind nicht gerutscht. Die nagelneuen Reifen mit Spikes haben uns Grip auf der Straße verschafft auch, wenn es akustisch sehr gewöhnungsbedürftig ist. Besonders Straßen, die nicht optimal geräumt waren und sich abseits der Ringstraße befanden, wurden für den ein oder anderen Kleinwagen zum Verhängnis. Aber auch für Wohnmobile oder Camper waren einige Anstiege mit schneebedeckter Fahrbahn nicht zu meistern.

Straßen - ohne Straßen kein Roadtrip. Die Ringstraße 1 war immer im super Zustand. Meist einspuring und bis auf wenige Ausnahmen asphaltiert. Grundsätzlich findet man in Island kaum Ampeln, sondern Kreisverkehre. Einfach, praktisch, wenn da nicht das Navi wäre. "Nehmen Sie die erste Ausfahrt." Zack in den nächsten Kreisverkehr: "Nehmen Sie die zweite Ausfahrt." Okay es gibt Schlimmeres im Leben aber nervig war es schon. Navi aus und gut.
Ein wenig erstaunt waren wir über zahlreiche Schotterstraßen. Die Isländer scheint der Untergrund wenig zu stören und so wird fleißig auf das Gaspedal getreten. Fliegende Steine rechts und links. Wir verwöhnten Autobahnfahrer. Das Tempolimit beträgt 90 km/h auf asphaltierten Straßen, 80 km/h auf nicht ausgebauten Straßen und 50 km/h in Ortschaften. Auch bei 105 km/h wird man noch fleißig überholt. Dennoch gibt es nicht wenige Blitzer, die aber zu 90% vorher mit einem Warnschild angekündigt wurden. In fast jedem Tunnel finden sich ebenfalls Blitzer! Also schön auf das Tempo achten.

Das wahre Gold - BENZIN. Der Literpreis beträgt in Island ca. 1,72 EUR. Ja, ihr habt richtig gelesen. Wir sind ca. 2800 km in den zwei Wochen gefahren. Da kommt schon eine gewisse Summe zusammen, die man vorher im Budget einkalkuliert haben sollte. Tanken kann man immer mit Kreditkarte, ob morgens um 4 Uhr oder um 14 Uhr. Karte rein, Pin eingeben, Säule auswählen und los. Sprich: Ihr braucht euren Pin für die Kreditkarte!

Ja, da sind noch die Versicherungen. Viele Island-Blogs raten auch zum "Premium"-Versicherungspakt. Auch uns wollte der Vermieter das Paket aufquatschen. Die Entscheidung liegt alleine bei euch. Sand-/Lavastürme soll es geben, die die reguläre Versicherung nicht abdeckt. Schaden am Auto bis zu 4000 EUR. Die Versicherung hätte uns aber 800 oder sogar 1000 EUR extra gekostet und wir haben darauf verzichtet.

Unsere Autovermietung war Lotus Car Rental. Ein relativ kleiner Anbieter, der aber in meinen Augen zu unserer Reisezeit das beste Angebot hatte. Der fast neue Kia hatte brandneue Reifen, nur 3200 km auf dem Rücken, ein Navi, Sitzheizung und jeden weiteren Schnick-Schnack. Die Rückgabe erfolgte außerhalb der regulären Öffnungszeiten, weil unser Flug bereits um 6 Uhr morgens ging. Am Abend vorher habe ich extra noch jede Menge Fotos gemacht, um den Zustand zu dokumentieren falls uns Schäden oder Ähnliches vorgeworfen werden sollten. Völlig unbegründete Sorgen wie so oft im Leben!

Fliegen und Fahren ist schon eine Herausforderung. Meine Frau am Steuer und ich an der Fernbedienung. Gutes Team wie sonst auch im Leben:) Leider drehe ich die Drohe viel zu häufig. Weniger ist mehr in meinen Augen, wenn man mit der Drohne fliegt. Das Verbindungsproblem der DJI Mavic Air hielt sich in Island zum Glück in Grenzen und so konnte ich die Drohne aus dem geschlossenen Auto fröhlich um uns kreisen lassen. Schnee wohin das Auto nur reicht und die dunkle Straße schlängelt sich Richtung Horizont.

no, not Iceland again! Too bad. It's another Iceland blog post / video ! Today is supposed to be about driving in beautiful Iceland. Cars, roads, gas and more.

Let's start with the car. In many blogs and vlogs it was recommended to rent an SUV with four-wheel drive especially in winter. The weather conditions in Iceland are unpredictable and especially gravel roads or steep climbs up to a mountain pass are often difficult to pass for smaller vehicles. A valuable advise! We felt super safe in our KIA Sportage, could pass all roads without any problems and did not slip once. The brand new tires with spikes had given us grip on the road even when it takes a lot of getting used to the sound they make. Especially roads that were not optimally cleared and were off the "Ring Road" became the fate of one or the other smaller car. But also for motorhomes or campers some climbs with snow-covered roads could not be mastered.

Roads - no roads, no road trip. Ringroad No 1 was always in excellent condition. Mostly just one lane, the road was tarmaced with a few exceptions. Basically there are hardly any traffic lights in Iceland, but tons of roundabouts. Simple, convenient, if there wouldn't be the voice of the GPS. "Take the first exit." Right into the next roundabout: "Take the second exit." Okay, there are worse things in life but it was really annoying. We just turned the GPS off...
We were a little surprised about numerous gravel roads. The Icelanders don't seem to be bothered by the road surface and so they are stepping on the accelerator anyways. Flying stones on the left and right side. We're spoiled motorway drivers here in Germany! The speed limit is 90 km/h on paved roads, 80 km/h on unpaved roads and 50 km/h in towns. Even at 105 km/h you are still being overtaken diligently by many cars. Nevertheless, there are a few speed cameras, 90% of which have been announced in advance with a warning sign. In almost every tunnel you will also find speed cameras! So don't speed!

The real gold - gasoline. The price per litre in Iceland is approx. 1.72 EUR. Yes, you read right. We drove about 2800 km in the two weeks. This adds up to a quite a sum of money that should have been taken into account in the travel budget beforehand. You can always refuel with your credit card at the 24/7 self-service stations. Insert your card, enter pin, select petrol pump and go. That said: You need your pin for the credit card!

Yeah, there's the insurance as well. Many travel blogs also recommend the "Premium" insurance package. The car rental guy wanted to talk us into the package, too. The decision is entirely yours though! There are supposed to be sand or lava storms in Iceland that are not covered by the regular insurance. Damage to the car could be up to 4000 EUR. But the insurance would have cost us 800 or even 1000 EUR extra for the two weeks and we took off without it.

Our car rental was Lotus Car Rental. A relatively small provider, but in my opinion the best offer at our travel time. The almost new Kia had brand new tires, only 3200 km on its back, a navigation device, heated seats and other great features. The return took place outside the regular opening hours, because our flight left already at 6 o'clock in the morning. The evening before I took a lot of photos to document the condition of the car in case we were accused of damages or something similar. Completely unfounded worries as so often in life!

Flying and driving is a challenge. My wife at the steering wheel and I at the remote control of the drone. Good team as usual in life:) Unfortunately, I turn the drone far too often while flying. Less is more in my eyes when you fly with the drone. Just stick to one course. Up and down is fine but no rotating of the drone. The connection problem of the DJI Mavic Air was fortunately limited in Iceland and so I could let the drone circle around our car happily from inside the closed car. Snow everywhere and the dark roads meandered towards the horizon.
