If you ask me about the favorite plant in our garden I won't have to think long: It's the ivy. Ivy, you will probably ask, what's so special about ivy? It climbs somewhere, well - everywhere and that's all.
But that's not all. Ivy is one of the most interesting plants I know and one of the most valuable for the local animals. Well - here in Europe where ivy is at home. If you live in America or other parts of the world: Ivy is a bad, bad plant and should never be allowed to put even a single root into your soil!

Bei der Frage nach meiner Lieblingspflanze in unserem Garten müsste ich nicht lange überlegen: der Efeu. Efeu, so würde vermutlich mancher denken, wieso gerade Efeu? Efeu klettert irgendwo (naja, überall wo man es lässt) und das war's.
Das war es eben nicht. Efeu ist eine der interessantesten und biologisch wertvollsten Pflanzen die ich kenne. Jedenfalls in ihrer Heimat in Europa. Für diejenigen die in Amerika oder anderen Teilen der Welt wohnen: Efeu ist eine ganz, ganz böse Pflanze die mit Stumpf und Stiel ausgerottet gehört!

What most of us think of when we hear 'ivy' is what the picture above shows: climbing, clinging and the well-known five-pointed evergreen leaves. But there's more to ivy. In a way this plant is not that much different from us humans: if it has a certain age (~ 20 years) and a nice home (enough sun from above) it starts to think about a family. Well, you know - about the birds and the bees (which are among the recipients of this development).
Woran wir bei Efeu denken entspricht etwa dem Bild oben: klettern, anhaftend und die bekannten Blätter mit fünf Spitzen. Aber da ist noch mehr dran am Efeu - irgendwie ähnelt die Pflanze uns Menschen. Wenn sie erwachsen ist (~ 20 Jahre) und in einer Umgebung wo sie sich wohlfühlt (schön hell von oben) dann fängt sie an über Familienplanung nachzudenken. Die Bienchen und die Blümchen, ihr wisst schon was ich meine...
The plant changes it's lifestyle. No climbing anymore - it stays where it is, the growth slows down and changes. The leaves loose the points and get more round and it starts to bloom. And these blossoms may not be very impressive (they barely look like blossoms) but they are a first class buffet for bees and butterflies etc. in a time when not a lot of flowers are left. From September till late October, when the sun is out and it gets warm, our ivy is buzzing with insect life. And it smells heavenly there, a bit sweet, like under the linden trees in early summer.

Die Pflanze ändert ihr Leben. Nichts ist mehr mit Klettern, sie bleibt wo sie ist und verändert sich. Die neuen Blätter sind runder, fast herzförmig und sie beginnt zu blühen. Und diese Blüten mögen nicht besonders eindrucksvoll sein - aber sie bieten Bienen und Schmetterlinge reichlich Nahrung. In einer Zeit mit wenig anderen Blüten, von September bis Ende Oktober, ist unser Efeu von lautem Summen umgeben sobald die Sonne herauskommt und es etwas warm ist. Und der Geruch ist wunderbar, leicht süßlich, wie man es im Frühsommer von Lindenblüten kennt.
Und Blüten spät im Jahr bedeuten Früchte früh im Jahr. Im Frühjahr, wenn es für Singvögel noch kaum Futter gibt, sind die Beeren des Efeus willkommenes Fressen.

And the best of it: you don't have to have an old wall for the ivy to climb and then wait twenty years. The adult form can be used like a shrub, it's a perfect evergreen ground cover (well, an up to thigh high ground cover) which you can easily foster from cuttings. It takes several years for the plant to reach their maximum height and get dense. But ivy can reach an age of more than 400 years - enought time for you and your decendants to observe the bees and the birds and see how useful (and beautiful) this little plant is.

Und das Beste daran: Man muss nicht erst eine Mauer o. ä. im Garten haben und dem Efeu zwanzig Jahre Zeit geben. Die erwachsene Form des Efeus kann wie jede andere strauchige Pflanze behandelt und aus Stecklingen herangezogen werden. Perfekt geeignet als Bodendecker (gut, bis zum Oberschenkel reichender Bodendecker), immergrün und pflegeleicht. Es braucht erst ein paar Jahre bis das Efeu die maximale Höhe und Dichte erreicht hat. Aber Efeu kann bis zu 450 Jahre alt werden - ausreichend Zeit für uns und unsere Nachkommen die Bienen und Vögel zu beobachten und darüber nachzudenken wie nützlich (und schön) diese unscheinbare Pflanze ist.

Schöne Beschreibung! Efeu ist auch symbolisch interessant und steht für Unendlichkeit, Treue. Die Pflanze kann sehr alt werden, wie du ja dargestellt hast.
