No other German city agreed so many contradictions in himself. Metropolis and green oasis, tradition and modernity, home awareness and cosmopolitanism.
Munich is known worldwide because of the Oktoberfest. But there's much more to experience. If you visit our beautiful city for the first time, you need to look necessarily a little.
Marienplatz
The heart of Munich is the Marienplatz. It is located right in the center of the city, where you can find the town hall with the famous bell tower. The 43 bells sound every day at 11, 12 and 17 o'clock.
In the middle of the Marienplatz is the Marienäule, where the pope has already prayed, and the fountain. Both are ideal meeting points if you want to meet with someone. Tip: From Marienplatz you can start a shopping trip perfectly. No matter what direction you go, there are shops everywhere. The pedestrian zone with the most shops is the Kaufinger Straße, which leads from the Marienplatz to Karlsplatz (Stachus).
Königsplatz
The Königsplatz is close to the main railway station. On the spacious square are three classicist buildings: the Propylaea, the Antique Collection and the Glyptothek. Above all the well-known architect Leo von Klenze shaped the architecture of the square.
At the time of the Third Reich the Nazionals used the square and adjacent buildings as an administrative center. At the eastern end, Arcisstraße, the so-called "Führerbau" was erected. Today, the building houses the College of Music and Theater.
Allianz Arena
The Allianz Arena is Munich's biggest soccer stadion and is located in the north of the city. It was built by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron and inaugurated in May 2005.
The fasade is made of plastic air cushions, which can be illuminated in blue or red, depending on which of the two Munich teams play. In the Allianz Arena, Bayern Munich (team color: red) and TSV 1860 Munich (team color: blue) will be played.
