When open source code is at risk the devs leave!
Just take a look at Skype...
Microsoft recently bought Github for 7.5 billion dollars. With just about every cryptocurrency on it many if not all developers are looking to leave github and move elsewhere.
Microsoft has a long history of jacking up such wonderful sites but I can't blame github for taking the 7.5 Billion dollar deal that's massive amounts of cash.
The reason Microsoft ended up buying it is because of the some 28 million developers that currently use it. It would allow Microsoft to interact and get its products more in the face of developers to use windows products instead of alternatives.
However Microsoft has said it will remain an open source platform that is independently operated by Nat Friedman as the new lead of Github.
The good news we all have time to move off of github to other open source platforms as Microsofts deal will not go through till some time next year if it passes regulatory review.
Microsoft Azure cloud network has not been used heavily at all compared to other systems such as Amazons AWS. However this is Microsoft way of paving that path to tap into the 150 billion dollar industry that is expected to continue to grow by over 25% year to year.
Are you a dev yourself? Will you continue to use github or will you be looking for other services now that Microsoft is in talks of acquiring it?
On the other hand, Microsoft has done a lot over the last couple years to improve its standing with developers and the open source community. This is not the same Microsoft of the Gates/Ballmer era. Satya Nadella has been laser-focused on improving Microsoft's standing with open source projects and the developer community.
That said, hosting your companies trade secrets on GitHub was never a good idea.
Who would you rather have acquired GitHub? I'm guessing most of us just wanted it to stay the way it was.
Who knows? Maybe Microsoft will improve GitHub with better workflows. If they make it a better service, people will come back.
After all, Microsoft developed and open sourced the Visual Studio Code editor (lightweight IDE), which is by far my favorite for web development.

I think alot of people will continue to use github. All these tech giants have away of buying out competition. Its just like how Facebook bought whatsapp due to its potentials. Its a normal thing and i don't blame the guys for selling

yeah with that amount of cash it is understanable why they sold it.
It is just sad for us

The great thing about open source software is you can always base yourself on another platform in hours.
Still though, after spending 7.5 Billion on it they will probably keep it about the same to keep people from leaving it; although I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Github had a sudden change in direction in about 2 1/2 years once everybody's got their guard down.

Lol looks like gitlab will be getting tons of traffic soon since we'll be deserting github in its droves. Why do corporates always want to weasle in on a good thing with a solid community

If I was a developer I probably would be leaving Github. Microsoft doesn't top my list for most trustworthy companies.
