After promulgating the decalogue, Moses made a long speech exhorting the people of God to be faithful to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. All the law, affirmed Moses, is summarized in a principle: "Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength" Deuteronomy 6:5.
And about this love, which also must be applied to our neighbor, depended the promise that God made of the land, explained the prophet Moses in his second speech: "Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the land the LORD promised on oath to your ancestors. Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not would keep his commands" Deuteronomy 8:1-2.
And the fulfillment of this love, which is also a pact, between God and man, demanded first of all a step, the step from slavery towards that freedom that God called the chosen people, the love of God is an unconditional and filial love that demands and disciplines his children: "Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you. Observe the commands of the LORD your God, walking in obedience to him and revering him" Deuteronomy 8:5-6.
And also, to achieve this perfect love, Moses taught them that they should not forget the fear of God, with the fear of God, men receive a heart that allows them to follow the law with devotion. Without the fear of God what remains is the road to idolatry. The spiritual gift of fear of God is constancy, firmness, devotion, equanimity, and stability. The Bible teaches us the Law of Moses is an expression of the wisdom of God, and the fear of God is its beginning.
