Virta Health, a company with the mission to reverse Type 2 Diabetes, has published the one year results of a study ongoing for 2.5 years. The purpose of the clinical trial is diabetes reversal. One of their main interventions was having the subjects follow a ketogenic diet - a high fat very low carbohydrate diet.
As per one of their communications:
"Our one year diabetes reversal outcomes from our ongoing (now 2.5 years in length) clinical trial were just published in Diabetes Therapy, and demonstrated that results not only last, they actually improve at one year." [source]
Here is a summary of the results so far:
- 60% of the patients reversed their T2D
- 94% reduced or eliminated insulin usage (that's very significant!)
- 83% compliance so far
- ~1.3% reduction in A1C (from 7.6% baseline to 6.3% at one year)
- ~30 lbs (~13kg) average weight loss at one year
- and more.
In this study enrolled 349 adults suffering from Type 2 Diabetes, with a mean of 54 years of age and a mean of 116 kg of weight - 92% of them being obese. Their diet was very low in carbohydrates and high in fat. They had to consume no more than 30g of carbohydrates per day to achieve and maintain nutritional ketosis (0.5 - 3 mmol/L).
Their blood ketones and blood glucose levels were measured daily with a dual glucose-ketone meter. Protein intake was set at a reference level of 1.5g per kg ideal body weight and they were advised to consume fat to satiety.
Tables with very thorough biomarker analyses at baseline and 1 year are in the paper for those who are interested in reading the full details of this clinical intervention.
In my view, probably one of the most common sense interventions for people suffering from a condition of impaired carbohydrate metabolism is to restrict carbohydrate. Even though I'm tempted to, I'll refrain from making further commentaries. You can read the full paper below:

Thank you, @cristi for this post! I heard about ketogenic diet but I didn’t know it works for diabetics as well.

Damn this is promising... slowly but surely, we are conquering diseases that in the past would accompany one throughout one's life. I wonder what we'll have cured in 10 years more...
Resteemed!

My father has T2D, my grandfather has T2D and use insulin. I hope not to be the next one, so I gave up meat and carbohydrates. And other change.
