I was diagnosed about 13 years ago. Started out on Novolog and an insulin pump. Very active person. For years I listen to the doctors and Dieticians. I was a vegan for two years and continued to put weight on even though I cycled about 200 miles per week. Dropped the vegan lifestyle and opted for the LCHF(low carb, high fat diet) 80% fat 15% protein and 5 % carbs. What a difference. I started in May 2016 and just got my labs back. 91 LDL, 87 HDL, and get this 16 Triglecerides. My doctor is stunned. My cycling has taken off, I sleep better, I'm not always hungry and on and on and on.
