4Cs of Diamonds

You can tell the value and quality of a diamond based on the 4Cs of diamonds. These are the cut, color, clarity and carat. The seller will use the grading report from the diamond lab to set the prices of the diamonds.

Moreover, one of the main benefits of the 4Cs is that you can compare different diamonds. Note however that while you will use the 4Cs to determine the quality and value of a diamond, you should always settle on a diamond that is most appealing to your eyes.

Cut

The diamond cut refers to the quality and symmetry of the facets, their angles and their polish. The cut has the biggest effect on a diamond’s fire, scintillation and brilliance. The GIA system of grading diamond cut has five grades. These are Ideal, Excellent, Very good, Good, Fair and Poor. When buying your diamond, always go for the ideal or excellent cuts as these have the most fire, brilliance and scintillation.

Color

The diamond color is the second most important of the 4Cs. The GIA grades color from D-Z. Diamonds closer to D have less color while those closer to Z have more color. The closer a diamond is to the D color grade, the higher the price. However, the exception to this rule is when dealing with fancy color diamonds. In this case, the more the color the higher the value and price of the diamond.

Clarity

Clarity is the third most important factor of the 4Cs. The clarity of a diamond refers to the diamond’s imperfections. These imperfections could be within the diamond structure or on the surface. Depending on where the imperfections are located, this could interfere with the movement of light inside the diamond.

Carat

Many diamond buyers think that carat refers to the size of the diamond. However, it refers to the diamond’s weight. 1 carat =200milligrams. While it is important to consider the carat of the diamond as this affects the price, buyers should consider the overall appearance of the diamond. At the end of the day, it’s about how the diamond looks on your finger.
