Last September when we got back to Portugal after our summer tour in Italy, we realized we never visited SintraPena Palace, that is one of the most beautiful castel in Portugal.
The weather was still warm and I spent a nice day there with my wife and little boy.
The castle is situated on the top of a mountain, but it is possible to get very close by car, and we had no problem in finding a parking lot for free near by the entrance, I don't know if during high tourist season it's so easy to accomodate the car, but it is possible to hire small tuck tuck to climb the way to the entrance.
Once at the entrance after purchase the ticket, if you are with family I suggest you to take the electric bus that will bring you to the castle because the way is quite steep.
The castle is so colorfoul and fluffy, that it looks like it comes out directly from a fairy tale or a disney movie, and the view around is amazing! Best time for me to visit is sunset time to enjoy the spectacle!
It is a national monument and constitutes one of the major expressions of 19th-century Romanticism in the world. The palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal.
The castle's history started in the Middle Ages when a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Pena was built on the top of the hill above Sintra. According to tradition, construction occurred after an apparition of the Virgin Mary.
This is definitely a place to visit during your portuguese tour!
