This park is located in an area called Free State, South Africa, It is near the Lesotho border, and covers an area of 340 km2 (130 sq mi).[1] The most notable features of the park, are its golden, orange and ochre-hued eroded sandstone outcrops and cliffs, especially the buttress called Brandwag rock. Another feature of the area is the numerous shelters and caves displaying San rock paintings.
Wildlife featured at the park does not include the "Big Five", it has mongooses, eland, zebras, and more than a 100 bird species. The park is the Free State's only national park, which is more famous for the beauty of its landscape than for its wildlife.
Numerous paleontology finds have been made in the park including dinosaur eggs and skeletons, of which the oldest dinosaur embryos ever discovered were found in this park in 1978.
The eggs date back to the Triassic Period (220 to 195 million years ago) and contained fossilized fetal skeletons of Massospondylus, which was a prosauropod dinosaur.
Several other examples of these eggs have since been found in the park. A variety of other fossils were also found in the park and include those of advanced Cynodontia, which were canine toothed animals, also other small Thecodontia (animals with teeth set firmly in the jaw), bird-like and also crocodile-like dinosaurs.
