I have recently been introduced to the sport of Disc Golf. To be honest, I always thought that throwing a Frisbee around was kind of a waste of time and was reserved for the lazier elements of society. Imagine my surprise when my buddy took me to the local course and let me borrow a few discs from him.
First of all, the discs were NOT the frisbees that I remember throwing at my brother as he ran away screaming. These were a lot more compact and sturdily made and had some great graphics on them to boot.
Secondly, there was an actual 18 hole course with defined tees and a wild basket with chains that served as the end point of the particular hole.
Third, and perhaps most embarrassing to admit, was that my friend completely schooled me on the course. I'm a rather big guy and average around 240 lbs. I'm proud to say that while I'm not in as good as shape as in my 20's I do pretty good. My buddy is 150 lbs soaking wet and is the classic video game stereotype.
Despite this, I was whooped pretty bad. It wasn't until about hole 12 that I started watching what he was doing and saw that his form made a huge difference is how he threw the disc. His disc choice and form allowed him to strategically throw the disc to set himself up for his next shot.
After our play through I was told about a few websites and video to check out. I have to say that I've really liked the content I have found. The Disc Golf Association (DGA) is claiming that disc is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States. I wouldn't have beleived it if I hadn't played a course with my friend, but I can belive it now. If yo are interested in learnig more about disc golf I suggest checking out the Disc Golf Association. They have some great information for new and old alike.
I am proud to say that I have bought my first beginner set of discs and am eagerly awaiting them to arrive this weekend. Maybe I can get in a bit of practice before I play the next round with my friend and not embarrass myself as badly.
If you have a chance, check out disc golf. You might be pleasantly surprised.
