Is Steemit The Solution To Facebook Ripoff and Monopoly ?

in discussion •  7 years ago  (edited)

Many people are freely sharing their personal datas  on Facebook (and other top social media platforms) which in return transformed Facebook into a billion dollar  company . Most worryingly, there is no appreciation or wealth sharing with the owners of the data’s rather a brutal censorship strategy that controls what people post and ready to close an account if they disagree with you.  The good news, however, is steemit and here are some reasons:

Pic source

  • Ability to make money: is there (for now) any social media platform that makes it possible to earn money by posting, commenting and up voting posts like steemit? (except Steem Russian clone Golos) . This wealth creation strategy will certainly make it possible for steemit to take some market share from facebook in few years’ time-therefore keep powering up your steem in order to secure a bright future.
  • Censored Vs Uncensored: Facebook , reddit and other social media are censored meaning that your posts have to conform to what they like leading to many posts or accounts being deleted without warning. Steemit , on the other hand, is uncensored and thus allows you to post about topics that are important to you and it stays forever in the block chain. However the community reserves the right to upvote or downvote posts and comments thus making members to post great stuffs and avoid posts that do not add value to the community .
  • Community of Like-minded and Intelligent people: Unlike facebook that is fraught with personal attacks, ideology and political extremists , steemit is full of intelligent people that shares priceless information’s about crypto currencies and other business opportunities-giving you the chance to make intelligent friends concomitantly with great investment opportunities.

Conclusion: Steemit does not plan to kill facebook or any other social media-in fact facebook is needed to take care of those who love posting selfie pictures , mums sharing baby pictures , ideology social network, political whining  and friends pictures.

Steemit, on the other hand, is more channeled to  those who prefers a mature and intelligent blogging platform and there are many of us.

Steemit, may not be immediately knocking off major social media platforms down. However, based on what we already see here on Steemit is a thriving community which is growing at a rapid rate. Steemit is still very very young and has alot of optimization and improvements to be made. But I am absolutely certain that what Steemit is accomplishing is the beginning of breaking down all of the points you brought to light. Facebook is looking more and more like an overly large corporate giant who has never financially benefitted it's users directly.

From here, many spin-offs of Steemit can be created based on the Steem token with the same core ideology Steemit holds and slowly but surely bring users over from the giants.

If you are here now, you are a super early adopter and are seeing an extremely early stage of something amazing and revolutionary beginning to emerge!

Hello @bitopia

What the people complaining about joining Steemit late fail to realize is that they are early adopters.

I have seen people who joined Steemit April last year and they were still not able to make a name for themselves, some of them have joined the so called "Late Adopters" to rant and complain how unfair the system is.

@ogochukwu

#blockchain-blogger

Hi @ogochukwu!

Yes there will perpetually be individuals who complain about being late to the party. Fret not, as Steemit grows, so will the number of these complains.

What I'd like people to realize often, is that the party is ongoing in perpetuity, it is what YOU are putting forth to deserve the appropriate return you deserve.

Cheers!

wow what a good comment @bitopia I agree with you and yes we are early adopters and will be all smile by next year after the HFORK 20 and SMT token implementation...I explained all in y for mes posts... more success to you

Thank you @charles1! I am glad you found my comment useful! I am now full working full-time to bring massive value to Steemit itself, if it may interest you, maybe check out my story of a leap of faith with Steemit?

I have follow and upvoted you! Cheers!

same here bud...upped your posts and followed...wish you more success and see my older posts for tips that will help you to be more successful here

Will do! Glad to make your acquaintance @charles1, cheers and see around!

welcome and I wish you more success here...happy weekend

I really like this post @charles1, as it provided me with information that I honestly really needed to hear. Steemit isn't out to replace Facebook, but to gather together a mature audience that freely shares ideas and concepts without the fear of being censored. Even if other people don't agree to your opinion, you are still allowed to have one.

You and @ogochukwu helped tie this realization together for me. Both Facebook and Steemit is not fighting for the same audience, and we can treat this like a nomal social network by interacting while providing fresh ideas and quality content. Many of us lean more one direction or the other, but it is managable to do both.

Both platforms can exist, and Steemit is still in it's infancy aiming to grow.

Thank you so much for posting this!

wow what a good comment @shello, upvoted and following you in order to stay in touch..keep steeming to more success my dear.

Thank you for the support! I will do my best.

Stay blessed c:

welcome and keep steemit to more success...

That is very true @shello

Just like the Radio, most people thought that the Internet will replace T.V but we all know that didn't happen.

Instead Web T.V came on and became popular.

Steemit still has a long way to go before being able to be put on scale with Facebook, the number one commodity online is Attention and Facebook has a huge Market Share of that for now.

@ogochukwu

#blockchain-blogger

Hello @ogochukwu, that makes sense that Steemit shares the same space as the other technologies before it. Steemit is aiming to become large scale as well, but for different reasons. Putting this into perspective gets me excited about Steemit's future.

Thank you for the feedback!

Yes I am so happy I found Steemit 4 months ago. I only wish I had started a year ago. I wasted so many good years and great original content on Facebook and Instagram for nothing.... other than I could place links to my Amazon affiliate or blogger blog and earn a few pennies from Adsense. At least Google tried with YouTube and blogger.... Facebook is a complete rip off. Steemit is the best. I have earned on Steemit in 4 months what took 6 years on YouTube..... upvoted and resteemed

The same here bud..I wished I started last year too however we are still licky to be early members of steemit because the future is bright isnt it?

It sure is. They do need to improve the system though ... I could not post for about 4 hours yesterday and I also lost several posts after hitting the send button.... not sure how they disappeared ?

Hello @offgridlife

In my opinion there is no "Late Time" to join Steemit. Even those who will join in Five years time can still male Impact if they deploy the right strategy.

There are two ways to treat Steemit, you can either treat Steemit as a Social Media Platform or as a Blogging Platform.

If you see Steemit as a Social Media Platform then you are just here to interact with people around the world and make friends, you will make money overtime but it will be slower.

If you see Steemit as a Blogging Platform then that means you have to observe all the rules of blogging as it applies to Steemit, ranging from Guest Posting(Yes) to giving great value and Feedback.

The tag feature on Steemit leans more heavily towards Steemit as a Blogging platform than Steemit as a Social Media platform. People only see it as a form of visibility and ignore its full potential which is a form of connection.

@ogochukwu

#blockchain-blogger

Good point, I agree with you

That is very True. I see it as a bit of both - a blog with more Social tools than I have on Blogger. The ability to connect with people and engage. 99 % of the comments I received on my Blogger blog were spam. Besides Steemit do you have any other "online Income" Sources ? Affiliate Programs like Amazon, Youtube etc etc ? How have they compared to Steemit's ability to generate a Living Income for you ? Do you Transfer your Steem to Blocktrades or Bittrex and buy Bitcoin every few days ?

Hello @offgridlife

The truth of the matter is that I am 100% focused on Steemit for now, though I am working on Some offline businesses powered by my Steemit earnings. And i have also started working on buying Bitcoins slowly overtime.

I am also a Consulting Visionary for some Steemit Projects here.

@ogochukwu

#blockchain-blogger

Excellent - me too. I only have about .06 of a Bitcoin - but that is already worth about $500 Cdn.

Interesting strategy you got there sir.

There are several sites that pay to post . Steemit is good .. not great at this point . fB has the numbers , the power , and the support of very powerful people ...

I also disagree that steemit is full of intelligent people .. smart people are everywhere .. if you suggesting that intellect is abound here on steemit . I say look around ... plus it can also be easily argued that steemians (all of us ) are only motivated to post because there is a promise of making money .. and hence many of the posts here are just rushed up posts .... I think that paying to post is good .. but that should never be the forte of any platform .. the platform itself needs a USP ... as stated earlier there are a few out there like steemit ... cheers

Hello @navala

People think that the USP of Steemit is money, that is a broken mentality.

The USP of Steemit is that it gives everyone a voice and that voice in turn can be leveraged when the community gets an increase in numbers.

People are runnign around looking for the money when there are a Billion opportunites lying around, if people can just realise that the most Important thing they can do at this point is to build Strategic relationships that they will benefit them down the line, then this SBD rush will reduce.

I am not saying the Money is not important, i still get sad when any of my post does not make much because I know the level of work I put into it. But I keep reminding myself everyday that it is about the long game and not the short term benefits.

The people who are collecting all the huge bucks going into social media influencer Marketing are the people who got onto those platforms early and made a name for themselves.

@ogochukwu

#blockchain-blogger

You are right many. Relationships and networking are where its at.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Good point ...let me know other sites that pays you more than steemit including the ability to learn and join solid communities. I agree FB has powerful people especially investors because it is a public company and the leader in social media segment. However how much have you gotten from FB? any hope of ever making it big there? for me, the difference is clear

It's not about making more money here or anywhere .. i can easily argue that steemit voting system is quite unfair ( you have power you vote ) and someone makes money .. every vote should be counted as 1 vote ( like in any voting system ) . FB doesn't have to pay .. even if they started to pay a measly sum right now thet would destroy most competition .... my point is the platform ( btw I ain't on Facebook ) ... FB changed the world .... steemit ( sorry to say ) .. isn't about to do that ... this isn't groundbreaking Social media innovation .. cheers

Remember that FB is based on monopoly and ripoff strategy..they make billiosnwith our datas and sell it to companies for advertisment money. Do they share a cent with you? people tend to be ungrateful to a platform that gives many the opportunity to mk something. Moreover , those peoplemaking it mostly invested in steem power and deserves their reward.
Some work hard and make money daily by commenting prudently ...you have to make your choice..play hard or quit?

I think Fb is monopolising ... but your argument is respectfully flawed .. at various levels .. as I noted .. as for steemians who have invested in steem power great .. but you can't tell me that are so many scammers here that haven't earned their power fairly .. every day I and thousands of users get messages to give someone SBD or whatever for your posts to get voted .. plus there are programs out there that can assist with followers ... how is that playing hard ? I don't mind playing hard .. but the field isn't a level one - cheers mate .. enough said - good luck

Your point is ok however still flawed with a lot of limitations. Let me know a platform that is not fraught with scammers ? FB?
Steemit , on the other hand, will give you the opportnuity to earn even if you are not a whale !!! I know many members from Developing economies (Nigeria, Indonesia , Pakistan , India , Ghana etc) that started here wihout money and are very comfortable now. They based their strategy by commenting and earning steem , powering up, joining communities and grow gradually...did FB give them such chance or make them selfie junkies?

I think the premise that Steemit is built upon could. I think some of the systems in play very much would. However, Steemit in its current state could not.

It's got the like system like FB, but lacks the personality...and personalities! Only your close friends and family can provide (this is an arguable point and more anecdotal.) It also lacks the customization of the feed.

It has the follower system and retweet system of Twitter...that's weird, retweet is a recognized word, unlike Steemit! =D I'm not a user of that network so I'm not sure what it's missing.

Steemit could improve in those areas and develop a little character, or more options so we could add our own. Great topic and looking forward to some more replies.

Resteemed!

Good point @ jinmi17 I agree with some of your points - like feeds improvement and personalites. However note that steemit is still at its infancy and after the HFORK 20 update, we will see more members and personaities joining ...feel free to see my older posts for details. Keep steeming to more success.

Yes, I'm very aware that Steemit is still young. However, the content is very much the same. Same worthless videos that lack description as well as trolls and malicious entities. Now, there is even more incentive here. Nature of the beast that is the internet.

Here's your penny back. =D

Good point, however steemit will not be the same after the updates I explained in my older posts however let me know a better social media platform...do you get paid in for posting and commenting faceboot, reddit et al?

Depends on where your prerogatives lie. If it's making money, then no. Steemit certainly can provide for that. There are also other options to making money from writing however they lack the networking resources to accommodate.

If you simply want your words seen and heard, there are better venues that also offer some sort of incentive...if you play by their rules.

Time will tell if it will get better. I certainly think it will after some growing pains and notoriety. There will be one caveat however, and that's getting the money trickling back through.

Good point especially if you are a political animal, then FB , Twitter and Instagram are far better due to huge member base. However steemit is growing its members daily and it is still on its infancy..next year will see huge influx of people ie after the HFORK 20 and the price of steem will shoot to moon. Therefore , there is more earning opportunity for us here isnt it?

Yes, indeed the numbers are growing and the potential can be there too. However, how many are staying? I havn't myself been able to seek that figure out.

Like I said, I like the framework, it's just got a long way to go to compete but I will say this, getting and keeping members is half the battle.

Good point, some will leave of course however millions will join and those who left will regret it because they can not get any other better opportunity to earn abd grow their investments by posting, commenting and upvoting. Let me know a better option if you know one bud...FB, Reddit, Twitter, Insta????

Great post ! I totally agree , never really liked Facebook to begin with , I never go there now since I have been on steemit , and never went there much to begin with !! Thanks for sharing !

welcome and thanks for your comment...you have my upvote, always

On Facebook we only loose money and time... that's for sure.
Where as on Steemit people don't have to invest in the start and they just only have to give their time and posting skills in order to grow... People can learn and earn here on Steemit
Love from Pakistan :)

welcome and good point...thanks for your comment and my love to the god pople of Pakistan-bless you all.

That is very true @taimoorabbas

I had no knowledge about Cryptocurrency before joining Steemit. But Steemit gave me the opportunity to learn about cryptocurrencies while earning One.

@ogochukwu

That is what I am and everyone talking about that Steemit not only reward us money but also help us to learn new things

It's for sure nice to see someone discussing the value of Facebook to certain segments of society. There are some people who will say that the established institutions are inferior to this new thing they are using based solely on the fact that they are established. I appreciate and applaud your looking at both sides of this. Super post, thanks.

you are welcome and the great thing is that we all will benefit when steemit succeeds ..a win win for all howevr FB and its shareholders gains all a big diffrence indeed isnt it?

Judging by what people have to say, there appears to be as many points of view as there are people on Steemit. One thing that is sure though we are a growing community and we will continue to do so. As you said Facebook has its place and will probably remain a powerful force on the internet.

Good point, I agree with you. Getting some market share will be great for us isnt it? I am sure that we all will be all smiles here after the impllementation of the updates isnt it

very dance your post, hope to be a positive discussion, thank you@charles1

Dance my post? what are you talking about....

wrong write, interesting to my point

what is interesting about the post?

Dance ? LOL 🙂

Absolutely

I use Facebook very little. A long time ago I decided not to continue to increase the amount of information in their databases. I hope in the future Steemit will be able to capture those talented people who are still on Facebook.

Good point @teks I agree with you.

If for anything, Steemit allows me to share my humanity online without the fear of being judged or condemned.

The list of the benefits are innumerable. Thank you for sharing this @charles1

You are welcome bud, I agree with you

I see Steemit as a place where i can share and find more meanfull and usefull content than on other social media sites

Good point and you can earn also isnt it?

That’s a reward for the usefull content creation 😉

Hahaha I agree with you..a great bonus indeed

@blueorgy , do you agree with the points raised here?

Agreed, this place is crawling with entrepreneurs. Resteemed.

I agree with you...thanks.

Hello @charles1 i really find your post for helpful for me and get benfites from it.. I think people nowadayes are spending so much time on the internet without gaining anything and steemit offer us this amazing platform to have fun, learn and earn money in the same time.. i really see very good future to this platform and all steemians that share value content like your.. but i am really wondering if there is a good future for sharing content in other languages?? hope advise about this.. because i speak Arabic and French and am wondering if post in other languages will give good income?? thanks again

Good point I am sure that as steemit grows there will be more tags for other languages...we have Chinese, Korean and Spanish already (including others) and others wre welcomed

yes there are other languages .. but if there is successful steemians who post content in their mother languages??

Yes go to Chinese , Spanish and Korean you will see very successful posts ...some post in English and their mother Language or even only in Their mother language even German too (Deutsch)

As always nice one...I totally agree that both has their fan base... For me I am more into steemit as it creates value for my long hours online.

Good point, I agree with you

sure..thanks for steeming hot

Welcome

I would LOVE to agree with you - but (there is always a 'but')

I wrote a post today about the future of steemit, and how it might look if things don't change in its structure...

I think you put steemit and facebook in there place.
Briefly i thought steemit must work hard to get people attention by something they need but facebook just for you what you want

Good point aam sure steemit inc will do their best and we are seeing more sign ups daily...next year will be huge here...

This post has received a 4.77 % upvote from @booster thanks to: @charles1.

welcome

Daily Learn some new from your post. Love to read it.

what is good about the post?

although technically a group of whales or even a large group of minnows could potentially censorship the entire cite. If a whale or group were to continuously downvote content on of a user they could potentially not have any of there posts seen anymore. I forget the username but I saw one steemit user called out some whales and now even though he posts content with good intent and quality info he get no payout and hardly an post lasts because they powerful members that no longer like him will flag or downvote I'm not to great with understanding blockchain or computers but I like steemit just hope I never become anyones enemy

Good point @isteemithard there is always abuse of power even in our own government and corporate world. I focus on my aim here to make contacts and enjoy myself while blogging and money is extra bonus. Some people like taking out fight with whales or anything you wanna call them and I do not mix myself in such politics

What is to stop FB or another social media platform from building this type of infrastructure for their millions+ of users soon enough? All sorts of major corps are adopting blockchain technology, and I can't imagine FB getting left in the dust on a site like Steemit. Maybe they'll try to use their leverage to buy the rights to it all out.

FB will not share revenue or a cent with you because it is not in their corporate strategy...they report to shareholders and not users of the platform...have you made a cent in FB or any other social media?

That's their current corporate strategy. Strategies change over time as markets evolve. That's a given despite current state. Companies need to evolve and defend their position.

I never made a cent with prior sites because I barely used FB, never used other sites except passively of late to follow crypto, and don't like the lack of privacy. I've had friends do very well marketing themselves on Instagram to quit their jobs, so it's possible indirectly.

Good point however people make it more here than at instagram...FB will never change their corporate strategy...it is in their DNA to use people data for advertisement money and even if FB want to change, their shareholders will never allow it because sharing revenue with billions of members will lead to no shareholders wealth maximization and that is the aim since they went public

Great introduction @charles1 to a brilliant thread. Thanks for putting it into language that translates that which I wish to convey. If I happen to mention Steemit as a media platform to the weary the weary grow more weary. Such is the jaded life of time spent on FB. I'm putting this out to the masses with a Cat lover warning. Great work thanks.

welcome and most of the weary are losing time and money at FB even without knowing it

hello@charles1

@scvwolf do you agree with the article?

Good article

what is good about the article?

You asked a lot of meaningful questions.

Like what? what questions?

"is there (for now) any social media platform that makes it possible to earn money by posting, commenting and up voting posts like steemit?" thought you already answer that and in response to the question that's asked "Do you agree?" I do agree, steemit encourages more people to post more thoughtful content, because here in this platform, often only the most interesting content survives. But i think that what steemit advertises itself as an platform where you can earn money by doing multiple things, it also attracts people with the mindset of coming here and registering in hopes of making money, and but often they will realise that its not so easy here to do so. They will either be disappointed and leave or Stay and start to learn the inner workings of how steemit work and start to build up reputation and effort to create good content that steemit so lovingly desires.

very good point, I agree with you. Thanks for your comment
