This Gina Carano business isn't a smoking gun for those who say we should be vigilant against cancel culture. Disney's decision is indicative of one thing that we all already knew: that Disney is a spineless, money-grubbing company that will put its bottom line above all other considerations.
This kind of thing isn't some recent trend by Disney. They have a long history of disassociating from anything and anyone that could tarnish the squeaky-clean brand.
It's why they retroactively censored Daryl Hannah in Splash. It's why they probably won't green-light a fourth season for a popular and critically acclaimed show like Daredevil. (Still upset about that. As good as WandaVision is starting to look, it'll never make up for Daredevil or Jessica Jones).
I say this as a Disney stock holder. I'm not going to tell you how much my Disney stock has matured since I bought it years ago, I'll just say that it was a highly lucrative investment. They take care of their brand very carefully and it's part of the reason they're well on their way to monopolizing modern entertainment.
It's a cowardly, calculating business approach that strips Disney employees of basic humanity. It's borderline inhuman to be as noncontroversial as Disney expects its employees to be, and this isn't the first time that company policy has punished employees for being human beings with flawed, evolving, or otherwise conspicuously expressed ideas. But say what you will about Disney, their model is highly lucrative.
Disney doesn't stand for cancel culture. It stands for big capitalism and wannabe big capitalists like me.
I hate it, but I also don't apologize from profiting from it.
