Choosing the right spouse can impact your life in a seemingly endless variety of ways, including where you live, where you work, how many children you have, and more. But did you know that who you choose to marry may also greatly influence your future income?
The correlation between relationships and wealth has been observed for nearly a century, with nearly every study pointing towards healthy marital relationships as one of the greatest catalysts for career success. But why is this the case?
People are Driven by Sexual Desire
It is no secret that sexual impulse is one of the most powerful motivating forces for humans. According to journalist Napoleon Hill in his 1937 bestseller “Think and Grow Rich,” love, romance, and sex are all critical factors in the determination of one’s success and wealth. After studying more than 500 self-made millionaires, Hill concluded that successful people are those who are able to harness this motivating force and redirect it towards their professions, with those who accumulated greatest fortunes having been motivated by the influence of a woman.
Though Hill’s research only analyzed rich men and is now outdated, the assertion that relationships are a driving force towards wealth still holds relevance more than 78 years later. As the great motivational speaker Jim Rohn once said, we are the average of the five people we spend the greatest amount of time with – a sentiment which is especially true in regards to our spouses.
A Conscientious Spouse Can Boost Your Income
One study in particular conducted by researchers at Washington University in St. Louis reveals that having a conscientious spouse can significantly increase your chances of having a higher salary. The study, which examined the incomes of thousands of Australian households, revealed that employees were likely to earn about $4,000 more per year for each standard-deviation increase in their spouse’s conscientiousness, with those with extremely conscientious spouses of more than two standard deviations above the mean displaying a 50% greater likelihood of receiving a promotion than those with extremely unconscientious spouses.
People with conscientious spouses tend to:
Be more able to focus on their careers
Feel more satisfied with their marriages
Experience less stress and drama at home
