Ragtag Do-It-Yourself Weekly Challenge - Raised garden beds

in diy •  7 years ago

Hello Steemians! @aunt-deb recently challenged me in a #diyragtag challenge on steemit!

Here are the rules for the contest:

  1. Choose 3 items each from the Resources and Tools lists.

  2. Explain how you built your virtual project.

  3. Pass the challenge along to someone else so we can swap as many ideas as possible. Who knows, they just may have the solution you need to a pesky problem or a suggestion that fits your situation like a glove!

  4. Use #diyragtag so we can find your post.

Here is what I was given:

FIFTH WEEK'S AVAILABLE RAGTAG RESOURCES -
Pick Three
Four 2x4 Boards, 8' Long
Six 4' x 8' Sheets of 1/2" Plywood
Six 8' Lengths of 1/2' Rebar
Twelve Metal Roofing Panels, 3' x 6'

TOOLS - Pick Three
Hammer ~ Saw ~ Drill ~ Shovel ~ Cart ~ Tin Snips ~ Wedge
Trowel ~ Rake ~ Post Hole Digger - T-Post Driver
Your choice on power or hand tools. Fasteners are freebies.

I decided to make elevated garden boxes.
I will be using:
Four 2x4 Boards, 8' Long
Six 4' x 8' Sheets of 1/2" Plywood
Twelve Metal Roofing Panels, 3' x 6'

My tools will be:
Tin Snips
Table Saw
Hammer

#diyragtag Raised Garden Beds

Using the table saw, cut each 2x4 into 12 inch pieces (32 total)
Only needing 4 sheets of ply wood, cut 2 six foot by 2 foot pieces from each sheet (8- 2'x6' pieces total) with the table saw.
Using the tin snips, take 8 roofing panels and cut them in half (15"x 6' - 2 from each panel, making 16 total)
Using the tin snips again take 3 panels and cut in half (6'x15") then each piece into 2' sections (18 pieces total, you will have 2 left over)

Lay out a piece of 2'x6' plywood and nail one 12" 2x4 section into each corner (4 for each board), from the bottom of the board, standing vertically on the plywood. It will look like a short coffee table turned upside down. Then nail 2 pieces of 15" x 6' and 2 pieces of 15" x 2' to each side of the 2x4s respectively, forming a box with metal sides and a plywood floor. Fill with dirt up to the top of the 2x4 (12") leaving 3" from the top for mulch, hay, etc. This design will create 8 boxes measuring 2' x 6' x 15".

I am so calling out @rockybrookfarm @awesomehomestead and @freedompoint to challange each of them to create something with the same set of materials I was given.

@armadillocreek would you mide if i used the list in @aunt-deb new contest post? It seems a bit more difficult

Sure!

Bro. Im on it!

EIGHT!! Oh, my, that's outstanding! And raised beds are perfect for patios and save on back-breaking positions when weeding & harvesting. This sounds like a fun project for kids to help with. Each kid could have their own bed to tend.

Bravo for the excellent results and also for tagging three more for the challenge! Well done!
