Building a playground swing for next to nothing - Childrens series.

Finally got around to building a swing.

If like me you have a child or more, they love to swing as we know, & Grandparents of the world take note also, as there is nothing stopping you from making one now.
Lets take a look at my starter pack, but first list what was used.

  • 1 bottle of Grolsch lager (yummy indeed)
  • 2 lengths of thread (2 x 1 metre)
  • 24 17mm size enclosed end nuts
  • 5 tree parts that were dried for 4 years
  • 2 swings for the price of 1 (bargain)

Steemit keeps turning photos sideways, anyone know why?

We had to remove all the bark first, as it retains mould and rots the wood from inside, so we used a couple of old kitchen knives that were no longer used.
With that removed I set about making the A for anarchy posts :-).

Due to the posts being of varying thickness, I made the thread to match each part, I inserted the thread through the measured and drilled holes, fitted a domed nut on one end, and cut the thread to size with a thin grinding blade. Then fitted the other nut.
30 minutes later and my pair of Anarchists were ready.

If by the time I get to the finished swing photo and it is sideways, steemit sucks, I can not see this new feature encouraging original photo content.
I made a couple of brackets for the swings to attach to, out of old scrap metal strips I had in the workshop.
I bent them around the wood to get the arch, then squashed the two open ends together in my vice, then beat down on the arch top, to get it that shape.

I fitted the top section with some extra strengthening, and a few bolts cut to length, then fitted the swing.

And there you have the almost finished article.

Not bad for a total amateur if I say so myself.
Tools used.

  • 1 wife

  • 2 kitchen knives

  • a grinder

  • 2 x 17mm spanners

  • 1 drill and bit

  • 1 handsaw

  • 1 woodwork table

  • Total cost = $15

  • Total gains = 1 happy pair of ladies, 1 bottle of beer, more to follow tonight, a night off cooking and a free pizza, a cracking suntan, a day of zero stress and only 1 visitor who is the very nice and pleasant bee keeper from down the road.

Edit = finished apart from treating with preserves.

Have a superb week and weekend, we shall.

I think the first item listed on the tools' list is the most crucial!

But seriously... what great swing set! Love the way you think!

By the way, I found this guy last night on youtube, he has a lot of freemason posts I thought you may like.

Cool it was Sam the english guy. He has some nice videos. He got married and then went over to patreon, and does not post as often to you tube as he use to. He would be a good one to get over on d-tube on a regular basis.

Sadly I have no way to get in touch with him, I shall make it my mission over the next two days.

I've walked all those areas, but I never knew the significance of what I was seeing. Thanks for the vid

As for your swing. Here in S Africa most swings do not have wooden seats. Old truck tyres are cut into about 1/4 or 1/3 of circumference, nut and bolt used and usually chains. Some have a hosepipe over the chain, at hand-holding height, so that little fingers don't get torn off. When cutting the tyres, they are also careful to ensure no wires are left sticking out, for tearing at the bottom of the thighs.

Makes yours sound good huh?"

You watched it then, superb, eye opener time is it not? and it makes my swing sound like a Rolls Royce.

Did you watch this one?

Thanks, yes, I have watched it - now
:)

Thanks good lady, all good fun.

GREAT!!! thank you!

Hah! Awesome sauce! I bet the little one is loving it. Now to go cut some trees down. One questions though... How many beers does it take for the 4 year waiting period?! I think Im going to need more.......

Hmmm after a few moments deliberation, I came to the conclusion around a supermarkets stock worth, and yes indeed she is, she loves it, have a great weekend.

Very nice! Good old American ingenuity. Nothing more iconic than kids and their swing sets. Kudos!

Cheers my friend, it is the Englishman living in Poland ingenuity though. :-)

Ah! lol...well, I guess we Americans got our ingenuity from somewhere....

Sorry about that!

I think you have an I-phone, and it is that that is turning the pictures sideways or you have them on a facebook page, at least that is what I have heard the culprits to be on sideways photos.

At least you drink good beer. I guess that was so you would have something to do while watching your wife put the finishing touches on the swingset.

I have not owned anything apple since I learned they built in obsolescence and the 3gs, so it was a normal camera photo you see. And yes, the beer was for watching her adjust the rope knots to set the seat straight. :-) Cheers and have a great weekend.

Yep, can't have the seat to high, or too low, just to the right height to swing without snagging toes. Still odd about the sideways pictures though.

Top job mate it is great to build things yourself. And that last photo looks ok to me.

Cheers mate, and yes steemit redeemed themselves at the last. Have a great weekend.

Well i can see progress in your carpenter skills , From the flag fence you must have learned about the bending of wood and how to prevent that using sacred triangles . A creation for joy made with joy , nice one .

Your turned picture problem must be a camera option in your phone . Something about landscape and portrait pictures .
If you get them on a laptop or pc you can easily flip them or chance the save from portrait to landscape .
Somehow a phones fabric option is always on making selfies ;-)

And a nice weekend to you to sir :-) .

Cheers my friend, it was not though a phone, it is a camera, and no matter if I turn them upside down on my desktop after importing, steemit turns them sideways, it never used to do this, and after talking to other people on here it is doing it to them also, at random it seems, take my second photo for instance, I did a 360 turn on it 1 stage at a time, though every time I uploaded it went sideways, so I gave up.

Upload sideways to have them placed ,.. upside down ? lol . some messed up steem code having fun with you . Random ai glitches to make one go on a rage quest to solve that injustice . Indeed , let it be , some coder will fix it some day . ;-)

It may have something to do with the size? (over 1500 x 2000)
This is just a test and I'll delete if it fails

I thought so, in comments it comes out right side up. I'll have to stop telling off newbies for posting their pics sideways :(

LOL, and there you go, you today learned something new, as did I, top man you.
