After all the wrecking and demolishing I've been doing, the time has come to start rebuilding this sorry excuse for a shed.
Making amends
Also featuring my trusty Axe and my poweroutlet extender whatchamacallit (seriously, what do you call that red & black power outlet thing)
Seeing as I totally killed the frame on the one side, I needed to rebuild that part, making use of the good parts that were still 'hanging around'. Since I had to replace the bottombar as well, I had to do some special trickery, add new skills to my skilltree.
The concrete slab underneath the shed was way to corroded along the edges so the new bar kept slipping down. I needed to fix that edge back up with some instant concrete I made with some instaCement 'just add water' then make sure it leveled with the old floor. After that dried out, I could place the bottombar.
Also take special notice of the improvised powerjack. The cornerframe was sliding out and down as well, so in order to put that back in place and cement it up, I had to improve using the jack from my car.
Double up
Look at that happy face. I was having a blast !
Since the boarding I was going to put up is adviced to be screwed to a frame at least every 60cm (2ft) and the original frame only had vertical posts every 100cm (3.3ft) I had to double the amount of vertical posts. No biggy at this point, since I had already build experience fixing the old frame. This was just more 'grinding' to up the skilllevel. Also, because I didn't have to connect it to old frameposts, these went pretty quick. I used a multitool to cut space at the joints of the vertical to the horizontal.
Up up and away
At this point, I had no clue whatsoever as to how I was going to end up at the top. I just started an arbitrary amount from the ground (to prevent groundmoist from seeping up into my boards). Once the first one was attached and level, the going got faster quickly. I didn't have to use the level as much because I could just stack them, predill holes, then drill in the screws. Predrilling holes is important btw. It prevents the boards from cracking when the inside pressure get to high. This is also a GREAT reason to own at least 2 drills. or a drill & an electric screwdriver. I had only one when I started this and I kept changing bits from a wooddrill to a Torx head for the screws. Not only does this NOT help with the pace, it's also really annoying and unnecessarily draining the battery with each change.
Please, take this piece of advice (which I learned the hard way):
- have two batteries for any battery operated piece of tool you have
- have at least two drills, or 1 drill + electric screwdriver to prevent having to change bits.
- Always charge your batteries (especially if you don't have two batteries) at the end of the job. You don't want to start a job only to find out the batt. is dead.
Just an awesome shot of my battlestation with the cut-off saw. I love this thing ! And my wife for urging me to buy it for this job
This piece of hardware saved me so much work ! Instead of having to use a jigsaw and hope to go straight, this just went through in 0.02 seconds flat. It features a laserline to guide you along your cut. This one definitely falls in the category "Great tools are already a job half done" (which I can only assume is a very bad translation from a Dutch saying)
After much hard work, and finishing up the long side, I was able to go round the corner. For some reason I was super SUPER lucky with the placing of the boards, since they lined up perfectly with the top of the door AND the top of the shed (I could fit them snugly below the pre-existing trim). The top board is just a tryout to see how things would line up.
Aaaaaaaand ....... It's DONE !
Well, the boarding is. The door & frame still need to be sanded and painted to fit the awesome new look.
To be continued in Home Improvement - Shed Renovation pt. 4 - Mending fences. I'll be showing the progress beyond the original scope of the project and share detail about building / replacing the connecting fence with the same black boarding as the shed.
