This started yesterday mid day as I have been thinking of the concept for a few weeks now. I recently cleaned up my gear shed that holds our outdoor sports gear and I found our old single place jogging stroller that I put many miles on. It has languished in the back of the shed for a couple years now and I have been wanting to make something out if it given the good structure of it.

The first step was to dismantle the stroller. I removed all the fabric from the frame and then drilled out the rivets holding the rear axle and support brackets. This left me with just the piece below. I could tell right away as soon as the axle was free that this project would be pretty straight forward. All that I needed was a couple of brackets to hold the arms together and viola!

I found that the existing holes in the arms made a perfect 2ft distance on center so the side bars only needed to be 26 inches long. I took a piece of square metal that came off an old shitty gazebo I was given and hacked it down to size. I drilled 3/16 holes through each end and slotted 2 inch long by 10/24 machine screws through. A single captive wing nut on each and the arms are together!

The width of the cart is just about a perfect fit to my kayak as you can see below.

Initially I tried using the ratchet strap but it is a bit difficult to get tight and set easily so I have moved to a bunge cord which is far easier to attach. The addition of the kickstand and foam insulation which are visible in the top picture has made it far easier to load the kayak onto the cart. At first the kayak would just slide off the cart as I tried to load it so I put the foam on the arms which helped a lot, but the kickstand made it perfect. I will probably need a better kickstand but the idea is there so now it is just refining the implementation.

The build took me only about 2 hours and that involved a run to the store for the screws. Now when I want to take the kayak out I no longer have to carry it to the water, I can just wheel it on over. The entire rig is only about 5 pounds so it could be taken on trips if needed.
