Custom Marblewood 1911 grips.
Custom grips is one of the first customizations I recommend to people who are looking to upgrade their handguns. Making your own pistol grips is very simple for model 1911 and most similar handguns. You can use the existing grips to trace the outline to a wood blank, this makes it easy to drill and counterbore for the grip screw holes. A little time with a disc sander and you have a rough shaped grip. From there try the grip on your pistol to determine how much material to remove to make it comfortable. Once you are happy with the way they feel all that's left is to bring it to 400 grit (or whatever grit you like) and apply your favorite hard drying finish(various oils, polyurethane). Anyone with any degree of woodworking skill should be able to get a beautiful set of grips in a couple hours with very minimal tooling.
