A Pony-Tail Hat, Will Be My First Attempt At Teaching Myself How to Crochet

in diy •  7 years ago  (edited)

Yesterday, I bought a pony-tail hat directly from a lady name Shirley Campbell. Shirley makes these hats by hand and sells them from her store which is called Cedar Hollow.

I admire anyone who can make beautiful things by hand from textiles, wool and yarn and Shirley is quite a talented artist in all of these mediums. Unfortunately, these are dying skills as many aren't interested in them, nor want to take the time to learn how to do it with any skill. Shirley has been making her own line of clothing for years and as such, often works out of her head and from memory, instead of using a pattern.

As the story goes on this particular style of hat, Shirely was commissioned by a teenager who does a lot of competitive horseback riding. This young lady wanted to have a hat that she could wear while training in colder months, and that could also comfortably accommodate her long hair when she pulled it back and secured it with an elastic.

This Is Why The Pony-Tail Hat Was Originally Created.

Here's the one that I bought from Shirley. It resembles a "tea cozy". Do you remember the kind that were popular in your Grandmother's day? They were often used to keep a tea pot warm while people lingered over a few cups. The difference being that there is only one hole in the top and not a second hole for the spout.

Here's what it looks like from the top. The hole has an inside diameter of 1.5 inches.

The hat is 9.5 inches at its widest section and is approximately 7 inches tall. I counted 25 individual rows.

Its Construction Is Simply Brilliant For Anyone With Longer Hair.

Today (even though it's August and hot as blazes) I have donned a sweater and my new pony-tail hat to show you how to wear it.

Guys, Not To Worry, The Hole Will Accommodate a Man-Bun too!!!

Hahaha! I can see it now...a brand-new fashion trend for winter. ;D

How hard can it be to make one of these? I'm not exactly sure, but I'm giving it a whirl and will provide an update if and when I am successful. I think that the worst that can happen is that I will produce a pot holder as a result of my efforts. LOL!

Did I mention that it is hot as hell today? As soon as I get out of this sweater and hat, I will welcome your comments and invite you to follow me on my journey...

No worries about this ol' cat wearing a man bun! Believe it or not, I use to crochet with my grandmother when I was a lil ol' fart. I really enjoyed it; I never made anything like a hat or anything like that. Seems like I made a Christmas ornament one time and I think I still have it....somewhere???

That's fantastic!!! There are some amazingly skilled textile and woolen artists. I think that it is incredibly relaxing if you're not trying to take on a project that's too complicated when you are first learning the craft.

Looking really very cool with it @rebeccaryan! You said it right, these kind of talented craftsmanship is so rare to see these days, it's great that Shirley is still rocking at it and even great is that you value them so much!
I still remember my mom knitting these in the past!
Lovely memories!
@progressivechef

Oh I'm glad that this has brought back fond memories. It's night time here now and even though it is August and should be hot, the temperature turned cold today. It's unseasonably cold. I might have to sleep with that danm hat on tonight. :D

I tell you even here the temperatures are getting weird everytime! It's supposed to be full winter right now, but one day it's super cold and next day hot! This is making many people to get sick too. Climate change is really becoming a serious issue!
For you it's good that you can try the hat out for a day before the winter time!

@rebeccaryan
Hmmm Maybe I need one of those. Not so much for all my hair. Ha ha
To help cover the bald area that gets cold. The material looks to be warm.
I could see you were complaining about the heat. So it must be warm. lol
Could you add another time consuming item of labor to your day?
Maybe. I don't think you sleep anyway. Hopefully I am wrong. lol

Hahaha! Today, I forced myself to write first.
I've been spending a lot of time on comments and replies, so today I thought that I'd better dedicate the whole day to writing.
I'm a work in progress and am trying to teach myself how to juggle curating, writing, and commenting. It seems that I can do 2 decently, but not the third consistently yet.
I just told your Brother that my Mother-in-law loves you. She's an avid reader, reads my blog and all the comments regularly. She's going to enjoy meeting @cowboyk. For her, I think it's almost like reading a book within a book...how do you like being a celebrity in my family Francis? LOL!

@rebeccaryan
I give her permission to love me. Ha
oops. There goes my last love. When she reads the "permission" thing. She will just give up. lol
I told @cowboyk that you were good on replies and that you did the unthinkable sometimes.
You even upvoted some replies.
Bingo. He ran over to your blog like a scared rabbit. Maybe even faster. He he

Lovely hat! You make me remember my grandmother she was knotted for us different kind of clothes, great post.

Hi @creativewoman! Thanks so much for reading and commenting. I am happy that this brought back fond memories of your grandmother. ;)

Now that is very useful Thanks you so much for this Diy @rebeccaryan

Thank you @blazing...Do you knit or crochet?

it's about 88 degrees here right now.as far as that hat goes I'm sure you could make one but that would be something that you wear in the winter

It's hot here too @cowboyk. I just put the hat and sweater on today so that I could demonstrate "the look". @knarly327 (my husband) was kind enough to take the picture and then get the hell out of the way so I could take the sweater and the had off...LOL...he's a good man but doesn't take kindly to being run down by the crazed woman that he married...of course that would be his fault.

looks like a great project! Perhaps just one skein of yarn to boot!

Best way to show the pony tail where you are using a hat.
thats a nice invention by the way.
even the color of the hat is so good.
anyone would love it.
let me spread this one by resteem it.

Wow, very nice and beautiful cap pictures. @na722
