DiY Building: A Road Fit For Rain...

in diy •  6 years ago

Maybe I should have consulted Noah about an Ark, with all the rain we had this year, perhaps it was a boat we needed instead of a truck!!!

Yep sick of the mud, I've been sick of the mud for a little while... it's been raining! We had a very wet summer and our driving back and forth probably didn't help the situation, but here we are and we have a driveway that is very muddy and slippery!

What to do with a muddy driveway?

Think about the 8 forms of Capital..., click on that link before going on (if you're interested), I explain what the 8 forms are and how they can be applied to a homestead. Looking around, there must be some sort of Material available on this 19 acre lot we call Dream Land Express and... There is!

AppleSeed Permaculture

Okay so this is what we did I've taken some photos:

In a previous post about building a small road (by hand) I explained the idea of working in a permaculture kind of way through STACKING FUNCTIONS.

In permaculture we speak about getting many yields (outputs) from one element (thing) in your system. For example, a tree might be an element in your system.

Turns out it was always one of my favorite principles of permaculture. It fits perfectly with my thinking mechanism and I have lived my life looking to stack functions without knowing it was a thing!

I harvested flat Rocks from a couple different areas on the property from which I'm stacking functions, as far as work is concerned. There is a little area which we want to dig out for a natural swimming pool, the other area is a place with lots of stones we want to move for a bigger garden next year, any stones that were flat I collected.

Next I laid them out on gravel which I had already tried to use for the mud... and than thought it would just sink right in once we drove over it! I followed the path of our driveway with about 2 feet of stone on either side where the wheels of the car would normally be.

Put some more gravel (baby item 4 it's called out here) from our the 21 ton pile we had delivered at the beginning of the summer (we still have plenty to use from it!

Than it was time to flatten the graven and add more flat stones on top. Flat, everything flat, it's perhaps a pretty flat subject...I don't know, but here's your next photo.

And I repeated this process until I had something else to do... before it was time to go fix a new leak in the RV and than clean the dished before the mosquitoes came out, I had one more thing to do for this stretch of road (the slippery turn!). That was to cover what I had started with more gravel:

See the rake on the wheelbarrow? That's what I've been using to grade stone...and than letting the rain temper it all, it seems to be working fine so far

I don't even know how well it will hold! And it was a lot of work...I can't imagine what it would be like to do the whole length of our driveway like this... praise the old school road builder!

If you don't like your surroundings, change them
If you don't like your situation, change it.
If you don't like your decisions, make different ones.
All of this leads to the life that YOU want to lead, not the one others want you to lead.

Life is like chess, always try and think at least 5 moves ahead, and if you can see the dead ends you can avoid them.

Gosh you need a posse! Get a roadgang to help and pay them in food and beer!! Does that mean you are staying for winter???

I like the way you think River!!! And with all the freight train runnin through here it should be easy to find road dogs, I'll put the word out.

Na I'm just playing weekend worrior... we're stayin in an apartment for the winter. Me in thw city and the family near the homestead 😣

Well its a start :) hard to believe all the things that were built before heavy equipment. I mean think about Romans and roads. Wow

Oh yeah I think about the Romans everytime I lay a stone down to drive on!!! It's kind of insane to think about what we accomplished before machines.

Im having a strange craving for a cobble stone road right now! Way to create a pathway naturally and with out concrete!

Heehee, thanks. I would love to not use any concrete on the homestead here.
