Atmospheric electromagnetic opacity - Earths protective shield from extraterrestrial electromagnetic waves

I use this image whenever I teach electromagnetism.

It shows how the Earth's atmosphere protects us from most extraterrestrial electromagnetic waves.

The spikes are due to various gases in the atmosphere.

The large gap in the radio and microwave range is used to communicate with satellites.

A wavelength of 10 cm equates to a frequency of 3 GHz.
