Marxist philosophists would explain this as symptom of capitalism nearing it's end. It is called "culture industry" and it happens when capitalism expands to culture it self. Music looses all it's subjective, deeper spiritual meaning, and is considered as manufactorable object.

The simplification and blatant appeal to the lowest common denominator does seem to imply that. But then again many of today’s musical genres go to great lenghts at experimenting with other aspects of music.
