Data was an asset, now it’s a liability. Businesses used to collect personal data like magpies picking up shiny things. Because you never know, right?

Never thought of this way. Food for thought.

It's scary and crazy these days how our personal space are invaded at will.
I once chatted (physically) with a friend about my intention of buying a new shirt and the next thing I know, all sort of ads for a new shirt from big online stores kept pop-in on my phone's web browser few hours after I had that discussion. I was shocked and remain so even till this day!

Absolutely!
I am yet to fully fathom how it happened but my guess would be that I had some form of an 'unauthorized' data mining app/service on my phone that capture key words in our daily conversations like 'buy'-'new'-'shirt' in my case.
