I am all for the land based fish farms as I really feel they can help mitigate the incredible problems that are created by open water farms. Our farm has been looking into aquaculture for some time now and with these sorts of initiatives happening it is only going to make the process more accessible to smaller operations like us. If only we could get crypto back up in value so I could use some to get the setup going.
Hopefully land based systems are going to greatly reduce the need for any form of medication being introduced to the fish and then being passed on to humans.
Fish farming has often been touted as an extremely efficient way to produce animal protein: the Global Aquaculture Alliance claims 100 kilograms of fish feed can deliver up to 15 times more meat than an equivalent amount fed to cows. The industry has gained international traction, with farmed fish surpassing wild-caught ones (pdf) in the global food supply in 2014. But traditional fish-farming methods come with significant environmental drawbacks. For example, salmon farmers in Norway and Chile—the world leaders in salmon production—typically use open-ocean cages that corral fish in suspended netting or pens. This setup allows waste to flow directly into the environment, along with pathogens and parasites that can infect wild populations. Open-air pond farms—found worldwide and representing the most common type of aquaculture in China, the top global producer of farmed fish—also have a track record of polluting local waterways with fish effluent and veterinary medicines that are used to keep disease at bay.

Back in school, one of my friends presented a seminar or something like this, I didn't pay too much attention though as I just wanted to eat fish at the end of the project, wish I had paid attention now. But I think it was something about recycling the water from the pond and reusing it in the pond.

It really doesn't take much to start. An above ground pool, a circulating pump, and some filter materials will get the process going. My goal is to have a shed or small building that I can house a few tanks in. The more people who learn about and build aquaculture farms the less impact humans will have on the wild fish supply.
