RENO, Nev. (AP) — They were the toast of Reno in the 1950s, when the growing casino industry sparked a boom that for a time turned northern Nevada into the West's top gambling destination.

I lived in Reno for a year in the early 90's. My dad used to manage this motel turned studio apartment complex. His buddy took over as the manager when Dad bought a trailer. Lot rent was like $435/month back then.
Housing was about triple what it is here in north central Missouri, but it was about 1/3rd the cost in northern California. A lot of people retired from there and bought an equivalent house in Reno and had plenty of left over for a nice nest egg.

Housing is going crazy all over the place. The prices cannot be afforded by most people.
